Handwriting Advice Needed
by Guest- 2 replies

Whilst planning today with a colleague - we were getting ourselves tied up in knots over handwriting - we've planned in various activities for our children who are not ready to write but are not sure what is the best way forward for the more able - should we be teaching the letter formation to go with the sound introduced from ' playing with sounds / jolly phonics which we do each day - we will be going over the way to write this letter - or would we be better teaching letters as a group that have the same stroke movement such as all the long ladder letters - but then we may be covering letters that children don't know the sound too! We were also looking at name wri…

A teacher who teaches on our foundation stage team is a firm beleivere that children shoud not start to record until the summer term. Is this right - is part of some guidelines somewhere or is this an opinion?

Speaking And Listening

A whole school initiative has been announced to improve speech and language. The strand to be focussed on this term is speech. Children in all year groups will be expected to prepare some sort of presentation at home with the support of their families and then to talk to the class about the chosen subject, which may be pre-selected by teachers (suggestion that year R/1/2 might have an all about me topic). Children may bring artefacts from home to support the talk, as they go up through the school may want to use powerpoint etc. In order to focus their minds on success criteria the children will be asked to select two friends to evaluate how they got on. For older chi…

Drama Monitoring

Hi everyone I wonder if you could help me? I'm being monitored in a couple of weeks and I've decided to take a bit of a risk and stick to timetable which means I'll be teaching drama when the link inspector visits me. I absolutely love teaching drama but I'm a bit worried as I rarely have a lesson plan and we tend to go with the flow and see where our acting takes us. I've had a lot of thought about what to do and feel confident with the story and the objectives but I'm a bit unsure about 3 things, the warm up and differentiation and children who find it hard to join in and so may have to sit out. Has anyone got any ideas, especially as for as differentiation is concern…

Hi Can anyone on this brilliant site give me some pointers/advice on daily organisation/routine of a class of 12 Y1 and 12 Reception children. I just feel that when I am teaching the Y1 group and then working on focused activities with them that I never have a chance to work with the Reception children. They work with the TA. Also when the YR are doing their child led activities it becomes quite noisy when I am trying to get Y1 to attend to text/word level work. You know how easily they are distracted! I know I could work with YR while TA does focused lit/num activity with Y1. Any ideas please?!

Foundations Of Literacy

Came across this fantastic book and was wondering if anyone used it as the basis of their Literacy work up to y1. I think it is wonderful -its theories are deeply rooted in child development and suggests we concentrate on the skills that come before more formal reading and writing is introduced. This is all music to my ears! Would love to hear from anyone out there who is using it Thanks!
