In the EYFS framework 2012 3.27 it says: Children must usually be within sight and hearing of staff and always within sight or hearing. I'm in a reception class where the toilets children use aren't part of the classroom - they're down a corridor. How do other reception classes manage this? I don't always have an adult spare to supervise a trip to the toilet (and even if I did they're often involved in something else). What about lunchtime - children ask MDS if they can go to the toilet, come in and go - even more difficult for them to have an adult come with them? I don't know how we can get round this?

Hi! I currently support a little boy in reception in the afternoons who has a bowel incontinence issue ( ie, he's still in pull ups!). I also change him at other times when I am working elsewhere. He doesn't have a diagnosed problem as yet but is delayed in this area. I change him as and when necessary ( ) and use the disabled toilet area as this has a couch. At present I have to change him with him lying down ( depsite LA advice that any child who can stand should be changed standing) as he puts his hands in it and spreads it etc. For my own protection I never shut the door, but yesterday another reception child came in, looked amazed then went back to class and…

Help going to be observed doing circle time with nursery children aged 3 and 4. Our topic is Diwali. Does anyone have any good ideas for a Diwali circle time? All I can think of is looking at artefacts and talking about how people celebrate Diwali. It will be the first day of our topc and the children may not know very much about Diwali. Any ideas greatly appreciated thank you

Hi all. I recently started in a new school that has been placed in SM. We're expecting a follow up HMI visit any time soon. I get on very well with the other reception teacher, but recently had a differing of opinion. The time table that we follow has the children attending assembly for 30 mins but sometimes longer, then straight back to do phonics and a daily challenge. Based on experience, child development theories and the children in my class, I personally feel that expecting reception children to sit for 30 mins then go straight into an activity and remain focused, interested and involved is asking too much. Instead I have let them have a 5-15 min free choosing time…

Hi all, I'm being observed on Monday by the deputy head and the school improvement officer - eeeek. However, I am pleased (and rather surprised) that they want to see me teaching through child-initiated play (they usually prefer to see key group time!). I am anticipating the usual - so how do you know what all the children are doing/learning? sort of questions, as neither of them are early years specialists. Just wondering if anyone has some good concise ways of explaining child-initiated learning to back up my explanation? Thanks Green Hippo x

Hey, I'm in my first year in the eyfs and am struggling a bit to get my head out of KS1 thinking. Thinking about UW i know we need to incorporate science, history, geog, and ICT etc. How do you make sure that you cover it all? do you have ICT focus one week, history the next etc? use topic planning and do geog etc only if it fits in? I'm getting so confused and finding it really hard to fit everything in also do you include RE in UW or PSED? please help me
