HI guys Iv'e just been given the position of Reception team leader in a small independent school which I have worked at for years! I was initially very pleased and excited at the thought of being in charge of taking us from a quite formal environment to a more play based one. As I sit here the enormity of the task has just hit me!!! I will explain our setup, we have two Reception classes which are next to each other. In September they will be made into one larger room. We have lots of extra lessons ie Games, Music ,French, Ballet ,swimming, all taken by specialist teachers. I am wondering if anyone else out there is working in a similar school/setup? I would appreciate in…

Advice Please
by Guest- 15 replies

Hi I was wondering if anyone could offer some help. I teach reception and had an early years advisor in observing last week. I had put colanders, funnels, spades in the sand. She said that this wasn't challenging enough for this time of year and they weren't learning anything. She also questioned the fact that there were 6 children at one point around the sand, but i have been told by a different advisor that you shouldn't restrict numbers. If the children had asked for these items if there had been something else in the sand aren't we supposed to let them. Am i wrong in thinking this? Has anyone any ideas for enhancing sand play? Also could anyone tel…

I am going to order 5 little men next. There are some fabulous ones and I thought some of you might like to take a look. http://bondspuppets.com/mitts.html

Dear all, This half term our topic is fairytales and I thought it would be a good idea to do Aladdin as all the well known fairytale are about princesses and my boys are not as engaged as I would like them to be. I am stuck on literacy activities, do you have any suggestions? lol Zouzou

Next week we're having an afternoon of brain gym and maths problem solving. Each class (Rec, Y1 and Y2) will be put into mixed aged groups and will spend half an hour in each class doing a brain gym and a problem solving activity. I was wondering if anyone had any brill ideas for activities which you've done and the children have enjoyed. We want to make this as much fun as possible. The activities will need to be suitable for all age groups - the Y2s will be able to support the Rec class - hopefully - if need be. My initial thought for a maths activity would be to provide them with a sheet(s) with football kits drawn on - blank top, shorts and socks. They will b…

We are changing our handwriting policy at school and have been told we will be starting cursive handwriting from September. I have never done it before and at the moment am not that keen. If anybody out there does introduce cursive in Reception I would be interested to hear your views (convince me otherwise )
