   Hi there. Our school is in the middle of writing a reading policy/continuum for the whole school and the input is very much needed as to what should happen in nursery. There is a lot of pressure on us to 'teach' the children to read to 'prepare them for SATS'. The Nursery teacher is off sick at the moment and past experience tells me that without her voice at SMT level, the rest of the school will agree that nursery should be teaching jolly phonics (we do that in reception and it works well as the children are ready for it then), and teaching them a sight vocabulary.    Just to let those of you know who were so great at understanding my position when I had a little boy start, who obviously had problems. He has now been diagnose as being on the Autistic Spectrum, by the doctors. his mother is a brilliant lady and the only person I know who could get excited at her child being diagnose autistic. He is now doing wonderfully at pre-school and my Senco and myself love him dearly. He has the most giggly sense of humour, and he tells his mum that I am the silly one and the Senco is the right one. Which I think sums us up beautifully. He interacts with all the members of staff, and the children now play alongside him lovely without any problems.…

   Handwriting

   I was just wondering how other people apprached handwriting. In our setting those who have very poor fine motor control tend to trace over writing. The others write by themselves. Our children with poor fine motor control are not progressing very quickly and i am wondering if by tracing we are doing the right thing. Should we be asking them to copy below our writing or let them have a go by themselves. I am not sure if we are actually helping our children or hindering them. Lola

   Hi We are doing some fund raising and in order to do this the children are all going to have a piece of art work framed and then their work is going to be displayed and the parents can buy their child's work if they want to.
