Gifted And Talented

I have a girl in my reception class who is very able. She is a fluent reader and writes sentences and stories independently using reception and yr 1 and 2 high frequency words. She has been identifed as gifted. Our gifted and talented co-ordinator is obvoiously keen for her to be pushed to reach her potential. However the activites being suggested - in my opinion- are too formal and are her pushing her into a yr1/2 situation rather than being allowed to learn through play. Any ideas on how she can be stretched without her being sat at a desk filling in the endless worksheets which our co-ordinator is providing her with at the moment? (co-ordinator is a key stage 2 teacher…

Hi I need help!!! I've got a child in my class who won't stop hitting other children. We have tried so many different things but now we are tearing our hair out because he just can't seem to help it. We want to stay positive but we just don't know how to stop him. I know that there aren't any magical answers but any ideas would be helpful to see if you there is anything new we can try. Thank you TrudieX

Supporting Families

Hi Everyone! I am desperately looking for ways of helping families at our Nursery. At least two Mum's have asked me for help to explain about mental health problems to their Nursery children. There are men in both families who are suffering from severe depression and this is obviously having a detrimental effect on the children who are very confused. I've written to mind who have sent me ideas of books and info leaflets for juniour age children but these are way above even adapting for 3 to 5s. It is particularly sensitive as both families are from the Muslim community and do not want anyone else to know, (I wish I could even let them know about each other so they…

Outdoor Pe In Winter

This year, because of PPA in our school being covered through drama, dance and music lessons, the school hall use is more rationned for PE than in previous years. All classes have been timetabled one hall PE slot and one outdoor one. Since the weather has got cold I have decided to take my children onto the playground in school clothes and shoes with coats on to do a variety of games. We usually start with some type of warming up activity, then may go onto something like small apparatus (throwing and catching, balancing bean bags on parts of your body, using hoops, skipping ropes and so on). Lessons have been varied to have children working individually, in pairs…

In a few weeks I'm doing something on growing/making vegetable soup. Does anyone know of any on-line interactive activities related to this kind of thing? The 'Come Outside' activity on CBeebies is too basic. Thanks very much!

Help!

I don't know if this is the right place for this post to be, but just feel I need to let off a bit of steam. Thinks at school aren't good at the mo - we've just had a redundancy consultation meeting, which has resulted in 1 teacher having rest of the week off... stress related. So at the moment we are all trying to stay positive about our jobs etc. We have a new head starting at Easter, and she has been in today. along with our LEA Advisor (or whatever they are called now!) to talk to us about standards. Looking at our results (FS, KS1, KS2 and across the board) they are dropping year after year. We've basically been told we have to change (I quite agree), but fe…

Ppa Time

Just wanted to find out how others find the use of PPA Time. All our PPA time is afternoons, teaching assistants cover all of it across the school, and there is no space to work except staff room, where your constantly interrupted. Just wondered what others did, whether you can go home, etc. The time flies, I would never get all planning done, try to get Literacy done, but the rest is done across a weekend. Does this apply to others?
