Is Your Outside Area Safe Or Risky?
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi everyone! I have to write an assignment at the end of my current MA module and I think I would like to do it on risk in outdoor play. I have read books on the subject by Helen Bilton and Margaret Ouvery and find what they have to say about providing challenge in the outside area very interesting i.e. children seek out their own challenges in their play and if they are prevented from doing this they may play with safe equipment in very dangerous ways in order to find that challenge. There are also suggestions that if we encourage children to be 'risk takers' that 'can-do' attitude extends to other areas of learning. However, I know from experience that many paren…

Next week is National Anti-Bullying week which our school is taking part in, ending in "Blue Friday" on the 25th when everyone comes in dressed in blue (not as a fundraiser, but simply to raise awareness). There are several activities for the various age groups - primary and secondary - that are downloadable on the website. http://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org/ However I am lacking in ideas of how to introduce this to my Nursery class. Can anyone suggest any stories that could link with anti-bullying? I thought of Elmer, not strictly bullying, but along the right lines. I would really appreciate any other ideas for activities or stories. thanks, Ja…

Individual Reading
by Guest- 15 replies

Hello At the moment my head (who is fantastic with early years) likes me to try to read with my Reception children on an individual basis once a week. Part of me can see why. The kids get very little support at home, and for some children I can see the benefits. However, I feel like it's taking far too much of my time, when at the end of the day most of my time is spent filling in school and home diary records. (I've tried limiting this but we are all asked to keep record to inform next steps etc). I've got 27 children so between me and my TA we are taken away form other activities for a lot of the time. What do others think?

Coverage Of 6 Areas
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi everyone I just wondered how much time people spend on the six areas of learning. I'm beginning to wonder if my planning is too Lit / Num heavy. I teach in a Reception class in an inner city multicultural school, with the majority of children from ethnic minority backgrounds, and many with EAL. Generally, the children come into our Nursery at very low levels. At the moment my currciulum is something like this: LITERACY / NUMERACY: Every day we have a focused Lit and Num carpet session. (practical and lively). The children will then have a focused Lit OR Num focused activity (again practical and play based as far as possible). The children are rotated in…

Can anyone help please? I have a child that has start at pre-school with us who is on the autistic spectrum. we have built up a good rapor with mum who is also running along the autistic lines as well. she openly admits her children are difficult, her words not mine. her daughter went to a different group and i think she felt they left the child to do things her own way a bit to much because when she went on to school the teachers have told me that her temper tantrums were terrific. i have spoken to the other group and they found mum and child very difficult. we now have the little boy he is just 3 has no speech although mum says he talks at home. he tends to flit from on…
