Hello all, I'm Collective Worship co-ordinator for our school and just in the process of putting together our CW programme for next year. I have been told that next year I don't have to take my class to whole school collective worship as they are for the first time a reception only class. We will still go to things like the Harvest and Easter services and celebration assemblies. This is great in many ways! However, we're a church school and I'm feeling that there ought to be some kind of act of daily act of worship for all classes. I'm thinking this could be something very simple for my class: a moment to reflect on a piece of music, picture, something in natu…

Hi all, I'm new here and would really appreciate some wisdom. I've just been made the reception teacher in my one form entry school. I've previously taught year 3 and year 2, but this is my first experience of EYFS. I'm really excited about the challenge of learning a new style of teaching and have been spending a lot of time reading up, to try to prepare for September. I'm trying to change the layout of my classroom. It's a small room with a whole wall of windows and another of floor to ceiling cupboards. The room does have an attached outside area, partly covered too, which is lovely. My question is, what would you consider to be the essent…

Hi All, Was just wondering what you do? How is snack time managed in your setting? Up to Christmas we used to go out to play with the rest of KS1, all children brought a snack in from home and ate it on the playground and then in the afternoon we have snack and chat and sit in key person groups with a piece of free fruit. However following advice from the LEA and Ofsted we are now stopping playtime to give the children more time in continuous provision. We are a small reception class with 27 children and 2 members of staff, 1 will be in and 1 outdoors. I had thought the children would continue to bring their snack in with them and we all have 10 minutes to si…

My school was flooded at the end of June and our nursery and reception classrooms were completely destroyed by 18 inches of muddy water. While I don't recommend this as a way of getting a refit (it was a pretty devastating sight!) things are now looking up and I have a completely blank canvas to start to rebuild! The challenge now is to get the classroom up and running again for 4 Sept, and it still has to dry out, be replastered and a new floor put in. I have too many ideas, a big must-have list and an even bigger would-like list. Community playthings are drafting some ideas, but I was wondering if readers had any must-haves they'd like to pass on? What's been your most …

Hi, I've come here because I know that you will have some great ideas to help me out! Tomorrow (yes I've left this a little late!) we are having sports day, but it will be in the hall because of the weather. Therefore for the day I have a mixed class of YR to Y6 and I have to give them activities to do that are based around sport/olympics but that are not 'sporty' because they will be doing a lot of sports day activities interspersed between. It has to be things that will keep the older ones busy but also that will be easy enough for the younger ones to do with very limited support - i.e. me with all of them (around 25). I've thought of 'I can' zigzag books Som…

I know I should know this, and I am sure I have heard it somewhere but cannot remember where are these still applicable to the revised framework? I was looking for a quote from the revised framework to update this from the QCA Guidance in 2005 "...the development and use of communication and language is at the heart of young children's learning" could I find anything like this? I could not! Urgh!!!!! Lorna

I have an interview next week for a EYFS teacher but they are asking me to teach an hours lesson for Y1 with a creative writing focus topic of my choice. Just wondering if anyone had any advice or ideas about what i can do! my mind is swimming at the moment, i haven't taught this age group since my teaching practice and only really know EYFS! i want to stay true to my ideas of play based teaching and learning. so i was thinking about re-telling/ acting out a story rather than reading it to start the lesson off, or wondered about starting a story off and ending at a door and using describing words to write sentences about what could be behind the door? or maybe a…

i have been hauled into the head's office to be told we are not tidying up nursery properly and it's not fair on the cleaner. we have 37 children mornings only. the children tidy away the toys/dough/empty sink of toys etc, and we sweep up if there is a lot of sand, but i was told we should wipe all doh bits off table, clean up all glue drips, clean the mop if we use it (which of course we have to for h&s reasons), and clean child's mop too and empty out mop bucket and swill it too. we are also supposed to check the outside area outside incase the caretaker misses anything so if anything is found e.g. a child's metal golf club bent in half with sharp metal exposed, …
