Hello! As part of our Houses and Homes topic I thought I could introduce rhyming by looking at the nursery rhymes 'There was a crooked man' and the 'Old woman who lived in a shoe'. Unfortunately, I can't think of any nice activities to accompany this. Has anyone any interesting ideas? Thanks

Number Boxes
by Guest- 4 replies

I have just got back from an expensive trip to Staples (aren't they always???!!!). Anyway, have bought a selection of coloured 3L boxes that I'm hoping to set up as 'number boxes'. The children are becoming really independent and good at using the equipment, so I wanted to make up some boxes of stuff that I use for carpet inputs i.e. the resources so they can start becoming independent with them. I've also thought of doing some specific number boxes i.e. 5 and sticking in things that relate to the number 5 etc. Am sure you understand!!! Was wondering if you have any inspriational ideas - I can stick the usual stuff in, but was hoping for something a little more…

Writing

We are beginning to look at writing development throughout the school. I have been asked to write what standard of writing i think children should have achieved by the end of Reception moving into year 1 and what they should have achieved by the end of year 1. It is a tricky one because i adopt a more informal approach to learning and some teachers in my school believe in a formal approach and think Reception and year 1 children should be doing lots of worksheets etc. Can you offer me any advice on how to convince them?

Sen

I hope you can help! What actually constitutes as a child with SEN in reception? I'm asking because there have been mixed responses when I've previously asked for children to have IEPs. Here are a few of my concerns: Child A: communication on his terms alone. Whenever asked a direct question or simply spoken to by adults, he puts his chin on his chest and sticks his bottom lip out. He cannot hold eye contact whatever the situation. He plays within the classroom, mostly alone, but sometimes with another child. Can become very upset and annoyed when it comes to sharing - as he can't. When you try and talk as a class or group, he is not on task, and he cannot…
