I'm doing a mini theme on shapes at the moment. We've always used the term "rectangle", but on a Nursery Education poster that I would like to use, they use "oblong" (which I was taught as a child). I do find that children muddle the terms rectangle and triangle, so oblong would be easier, but those who know the name already know it as "rectangle". I'm sure my own children who are further up the school now call it an "oblong". The curriculum guidance is no help at all. Which term should I use with my Nursery children? Thanks, Jackie

I want to buy a book stand for the Nursery for the front of the group when we are on the carpet. I have seen some really good ones in the hope catalogue but they seem very tall for young children. Anyone any ideas or suggestions?

Can anybody recommend any books I can use with my special school reception class about different types of familiies? Last year I borrowed a book from our library called 'Who are your Family?' but I am having problems trying to get hold of this book again. Thanks, Suzanne

Dear All Hello I am now physical coordinator at the nursery(0 to 3s as separate day care included) I have been asked to devise a questionnaire for staff and find a developmental checklist for 0 - 4 years. Does anyone have such a thing? or know where can get hold of one? I'd be eternally grateful Many thanks Kate

I currently work in a Reception class and often find myself arguing my case for continuing with active learning through play right to the end of the Summer Term. Issues often crop up about how well the children settle in to Year 1 if the children have not experienced a more formal atmosphere by the end of their Reception Year. I wondered if anyone else had this problem, or if there were any good ideas out there for a smooth transition into Year 1. <_

Just wanted to flag up TEacher's TV programme on Role Play which is being shown this week. This is my setting and I'm so proud of the children. I would love your opinions on it. You can watch the programmes on line if you go to the website. I have not worked out how to record freeview yet! The release of this programme coincides with OFsted. I hope they watch it!
