Reception Induction
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi there, I am just thinking about our new intake in September! Usually the children come start school (mornings only) for the first week, building up group by group so by friday all the children are in for a morning. (The oldest start first). This continues for the next two weeks, all children stay to lunch and different groups stay for the afternoon session. I have a class of 30 pure reception (birthdays from january - august) but we also have a reception year 1 mixed group with 15 reception children whose birthdays are before christmas. I wondered whether a change would be good. I'm sure there are lots of different induction programs out there, if you have the…

Guided Reading
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi, I've been reading the posts about guided reading and am wondering how people are recording the sessions. Also do you have a group target taken from the literacy strategy and then a further learning intention for each session that changes more frequently? Thanks Jo

I have a child in my reception class who 'flits' from activity to activity, when he moves around, he tends to be quite boisterous, and finds it hard to stay on an activity for more than about 2 or 3 minutes, does anyone have any ideas on increasing his attention span

Interview And Observation, Help! 1 2
by Guest- 39 replies

Dear all! I got a phone call last night asking me if I am still interested in this post I applied for at a local infant school. Obviously I am and she invited me for interview on Tuesday morning (I'm ok with that) and then she said, and I'll be wanting to come and see you. Is Monday morning ok? Not like I could say no, and to be honest, its better than this week as yesterday and today I've been off with a nasty cold and no voice! Now however its deciding what to do with my lot! I've got 20 Y1s and 10YRs and I can do literacy or numeracy, but I'm leaning towards literacy as that is easier to do when someone is watching. Next week I'm supposed to be doing fantasy worl…

Books For Numeracy
by Guest- 12 replies

Hi, Recently i went on a course about numeracy in the foundation stage and a few of the teachers there used stories as a starting point for their numeracy lessons. I'd never heard of this before but think it's a fab idea, only problem is as i'm struggling to find books (as an NQT i still only know a small pile full). Does anyone know of a good website for ideas or is it a matter of trawling the stands in waterstones? Thanks

Rainy Day Activities

Hi again, I couldn't work out how to put this in the topic ideas section so I've had to post it here, sorry! We have continuous, open access out door provision, which is great when the weather is good. We are hoping to build up a bank of plans/activites/enhancement boxes which can be used on rainy days! So far I have thought of splashing in puddles, collecting rainwater and (found in another post) listening to the sound the rain makes on different materials. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I also have a vague recollection that powder paint can be used to make rain pictures, can't quite figure this out; wouldn't the paper get soggy? thanks jo

Open Plan Setting

Hi everybody. I found sometimes very difficult to concentrate on activity because of noise level. We are open plan setting, and that is issue for long time now. We did separating rooms with peaces of furniture and we have 2 sliding doors but it is still sometimes hard to get children to focus. We mention the mobile screens also, but I am interesting of yours opinions and ideas. What do you think?

Guided Reading In Yr R
by Guest- 4 replies

Could someone anyone please confirm if we are required to do guided reading in YR. I have been on a course for moderation and it would appear that practice varies widely. I met R teachers who do not take groups for guided reading. I thought we were legally required to by the end of the R year. What are other peoples thoughts?
