Last Year I taught in reception and I was told to do guided reading in the summer term to 'get them ready for year one' ( I hate that phrase!) Another year wiser, I've been much more critical of things that have been put in place (before I arrived) with respect to a: whether we should be doing them at all in recpetion and b: are activities to 'get the ready for year 1' smothering the FS curriculum. So before I argue my case in school, I thought I'd tap into this wonderful source of knowledge on here so basically, does anyone know if we HAVE to do guided reading in reception? or, does anyone have any views on it being done in reception? I'm very much i…

I want to develop a resource box (ideas, games, objects) that could be used outside. It will be for the nursery and reception class (and proabably Year 1 too). I have started to collect some ideas and we are planning to do some playground painting soon to incorporate mathematical development, but I thought I would tap into everyone's wonderfully creative minds here, to see what ideas come up/ what others have already done. I am aware that the box resources will need to be changed depending on topic/interest, but I planned to have a 'core' resource box, that has things for adult initiated open ended activitiesand also child initiated activities. Thanks, Marie

While I acknowledge that this topic can generate a lot of rich language and vivid imaginary play, I would never use it as a theme in my nursery. Lets not forget they were violent ruffians who raped, pillaged and plundered. The skull and cross bones is full of scary imagery. As a child I remember being terrified of Long John Silver although I'm sure todays children would think him quite tame. Should we be idolizing these violent criminals. Am I alone in my beliefs, it seems a popular topic with others?

Story Suggestions Please 1 2

Hi, I have an interview next Thursday where I am required to read a story to a reception class for 15 minutes. After the story I am expected to do a short discussion with the children. Just wondering what books you think would suit this purpose really well while engaging the children at the same time? I am already so nervous as I love the school and want to make a good impression.

Assembly Ideas
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi! Help! I wonder if anyone can offer any ideas/ themes that I could use with my Reception class for an assembly to be done in May? My class have to perform for whole school assembly, with Key Stage 1/2. Our topic at the time will be minibeasts, but I don't have to use this theme. I would like to use a favourite story as a starting point and develop it further to include paintings/pictures etc. Any ideas/ thoughts would be welcome! Perhaps someone could suggest a suitable story- I am new to Reception this year! Many thanks.

Up In The Sky
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi All, So here I am again, two weeks into this half term and I'm starting to think about planning the next (both of which we've totally re-written all the planning for). We've done Under the Sea this half term, and when I asked for any advice, the response was fantabulous, so basically, I was just wondering if anyone has done/is doing 'Up in the Sky' as a topic and knows things which work really well, or any good books to use. Thanks in advance ~ Paul

For those of you interested in or concerned about the transition form reception to year one, this report 'A Study of the Transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1' has just come out (i believe this week in fact) that you find of some interest. I havent read it myself yet, so cant comment on the findings, although I think we can hazard a guess? You can find it here

Class Sizes

I wonder if anyone out there can inform me what maximum class size is for Reception and Year 1. There is some concern amongst staff in our school, as we are unlikely to meet our intake number for September, which could result in staff having to change year- group. Many thanks
