Work-force Reform

I am part of the working party at my school to discuss / solve how the school is going to provide all teachers with the 10% PPA as from September. Lots of ideas were thrown around, and we've by no means come to any conclusions as we haven't yet had next years budget. Though the head and SMT seem to be very keen on covering all Nursery and Reception teacher's PPA time by having a HLTA take the class, and having a low-level TA support them. Thus the staffing will go from having a qualified teacher and a HLTA in my class to having a HLTA and a low-level TA which I'm not very happy about! I think it seriously devalues teachers, jeapordises our long-term future as…

Assembly Again!

I know that there is thread running on assembly help...but.... I am also an NQT - assembly is in three weeks. The school is quite keen on assemblies (on TP I did an assembly but both the schools weren't really bothered about them, not in a negative way, just a there are more important things to be doing than training and show casing a polished performance). My school regards them quite highly and so am concious of the effort required. I just can't seem to get started. Vaguely ideas are- chn stand up and say what their favourite animal is (they are learning individually about their own fav), and something about where they like to live, we make masks and show what o…

Creative Ideas Please
by Guest- 17 replies

Hi, I am after some creative ideas as I am apparently lacking in this area. I need ideas for making flowers that look good but don’t necessarily need loads of adult support? I am also sequencing the growth of a plant and had pictures to sequence but now feel I should do something more creative – any ideas please?

I have a dilemma. How can I provide quality outdoor provision for 90 reception children in a playground environment that is a sloping, slippy old tarmac surface? We don't have free flow access for any of the 3 reception classrooms. We generally have a 15 minute playtime in morning and afternoon. We have a shed full of toys that only comes out in summer. The argument that the FS co makes for not having them out throughout is that if it rains they'll get wet! And it's also too cold to have it set up and for the children to spend a great deal of time out there in the afternoons. I can't be seen to be the only reception class to use the outside area as it wouldn't be f…

Structure Of Day
by Guest- 6 replies

Am sure this topic has been batted about a bit but I am hoping that someone out there will take pity on me and share a detailed summary of their day - that includes individual reading/observations/lit/num/group work/individual time/breathing(!)/choosing/focused ku or creative activities etc. Or simply attaching a timetable and giving me a little idea how you manage your adults!!! Am a second year teacher in Reception that walked into this position after completing my final year's teaching placement there. Have come to a point where I feel that my creative spark/individuality/freshness is slowly but surely being stamped out of me by the very capable and long standing…

New Starters:
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi all, I thought I would ask your help. In two weeks I have a meeting for the reception New starters for September. The head has asked me to produce a handbook for the parents to help give guidance in preparing their children for school. He wants these to be based on the 6 areas of learning. Apparently there used to be a handbook- but it was binned when the FS Curriculum was introduced so I am literally starting from a blank canvas......talk about reinventing the wheel!   I wouldn't panic so much if he asked for it before Christmas- but I have two weeks to prepare this and a powerpoint presentation for the parents. It seems gone are…

Help With Lesson
by Guest- 11 replies

My new ( and rather scary) headteacher is coming to observe me soon and I wondered if any of you wonderful people out there could help me come up with some ideas for a "lesson" with my reception class. We actually run an integrated day with some groups doing child-initaited activites and some groups doing adult-directed activites at any one time, but she wants a lesson and a lesson plan so there we go! At the moment our topic is 'people who help us' and so far we have looked at cooks, cleaners, police officers, postmen and firemen. What I would like would be a fiction text to base activities around and it would be good if it could include one of these people or someon…

Parents Evening
by Guest- 8 replies

Hi everybody, I have just had my head come into to me and ask me if i'm prepared for parents evening (Late next week), and that it is really important. I know this but why the enphasis now? also that the previous teachers used to see the parents once a week or so. Does everybody else do this? Seems a bit over the top to me, i talk to my parents if i need to but that often about profiles etc? Anyway what should i be talking about at this 'important' parent evening about the profile, i thought it was talking about where their child is and how they could help them move on. I'm worried i'm missing something...
