Hi! I'm just wondering if anyone can give me ideas on the best way/order to introduce letters to children in the foundation stage (I am a Reception teacher in a Foundation Satge Unit). This is my 4th year of teaching Reception now and I have introduced the letters in so many different ways that I've started to coinfuse myself! In my first year I focused on 1 letter a week. The children from the Nursery had learnt LetterLand and I did feel as though I was 'weaning them off it' as some children (as I have read other teachers on this site have found just associate the letter with the characters' name not the sound it makes). I then went onto introducing 5 letters a week-…

Creativity

Hi, I'm on teaching practice and I'm struggling with creative development and knowing how much input I should give the children. My tutor feels that the children's work has not been individual enough so far and almost mass produced though I feel I have left them to do their own thing pretty much. If i ask the children to produce something in particular, surely thats not allowing them to be fully creative is it? So what should i do?! I have to plan for the next few weeks and would really appreciate your thoughts on how I should approach the creative activities to ensure that the children are being creative! Thank you in advance

Displaying Learning Objectives

Does anyone display written learning objectives in reception classes. I would be interested in hearing how you do this as most children will be unable ti read them. Another problem I have is that we operate a carousel of activities so cannot work out how I could do this for every activity. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Global Citizenship: Ideas Please!
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi everyone, My school has decided to have a themed week on global citizenship after half term and I'm finding it hard to think of ideas appropriate for reception children. Only ideas so far are to look at a child from developing country and compare their life to the childrens. Also maybe some local environment stuff like looking after our school/village: recycling/rubbish around the school/area! Apart from that a bit stuck so would appreciate any ideas!! Becky

Calling all good ideas and resources. I have just got a NEW smartboard in my Reception Class and we're getting along fine with it. We have the accompanying software and Easi teach maths but am just wondering if folks out there have got some interesting ideas or websites that would be of use. I am feeling the need to use it more creatively but am not sure how! Many thanks for any ideas.

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone can help? I work within a pre-school environment and try my best to keep in touch with the local schools regarding teaching methods. We used to work with "Letterland", but was told that that had been stopped due to OFSTED not liking "Naughty Nick". We have been using "Jolly Phonics" which is used by alot of the local schools, however a new school is due to open in Sept 2005 and on speaking to a few of the governers they have said that a new phonics system is being trialled - they say that they think it is called "Thrash or Crash or something like that??". Apparently it incorporates both phonetics and the old alphabet…
