We are starting our Kitemark Quality Assurance scheme and have been advised that it "might be an idea to think about doing home visits before a child starts Pre-school". I know schools do this but don't know of any Pre-schools in our area that do them. I have searched and found postings advising what sort of things to ask, appointment times, etc. but just wondered whether many Pre-schools visit the home before a child starts. Children and parents come and visit us and get to know the staff, other children, the routine, and the building - but as yet, we don't go to them! Do many Pre-schools do home visits - and what are your experiences? Sue J

Post Office Role Play Area
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi I am wanting to set up a post office role play area in my reception class and was wondering if anyone has made one before and has good ideas for resources and activities. We recently went on a journey to the post office, each child bought a stamp and posted a postcard to their friend. Our school's post man then came in and told us the journey that the postcard makes from the post box to our letter box. I will ask the children for their ideas on what we should include but I'm in need of some inspiration really.

Applying For A 1st Appointment
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi everyone, I'm currently completing an application form for a foundation job though I haven't been given a person specification. Is this usual as I don't have a clue what sort of a teacher they are looking for?! I'm therefore struggling with the personal statement bit and what to include, though I have read some previous posts which were very helpful! I'd be grateful for any advice on what to include in the statement (and whether to handwrite or type it!) Thanks guys

Reading Scheme

Dear all, I've been searching back through old posts because I'm sure we've covered this before - but no luck so far so I'll just ask afresh & hope you don't mind... I want to buy some books (mainly for guided reading but to supplement take home books too) which are based on a phonics approach to teaching reading. I need to get hold of a scheme which has lots of simple texts & progresses fairly logically but not too quickly through the skills needed to start learning to read. Can anyone recommend a scheme to use? For example I like the Flying Boot Max books but they move on much too quickly to difficult texts. We use ORT at school but I'm getting e…

Hi there anyone out there got a light box? I'd like to know where you got it from, how much you paid and more importantly what kind of things you can do with them. Our head is keen to invest in one and although you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth when money is being offered, I have found one that is very pricey at £230 from a company called 'Step by Step'. I'd like to know what things it can do for this amount of money so I'd welcome any advice. Cheers folks Liza

Remote Control Cars
by Guest- 7 replies

Hey guys. Does anyone know where I can get about 8 decent remote control cars that isn't going to cost me a remortgage on my classroom???!!! I'm in Reception and need to start really resourcing my KU ICT bits. Got in a Pixie and have a whiteboard, but seen as I'm on with the resourcing (!), may try and get in some cars if at all possible. Have looked through some of the catalogues at school and have had no such luck and Argos seems to be charging extortionate prices. Was wondering if any of you had had any luck at finding a decent car for a decent (enough!) price. Thanks for the help! D xxx
