Im am in the process of writing my dissertation and the ideas are running around my head like I dont know what.... the main focus of my research will be the transition from foundation stage to KS 1 and the question being are children finding it a big step from play to formal teaching I know it is necessary at some point for children to make this change but are we preparing our children adequatly? so to get the ball rolling, when should we be making children sit at desks and be taught? reception? year 1? never? should children still be playing in year 1? is there too much play in reception?

Target Setting
by Guest- 8 replies

My school is currently going through an Intensive Support Programme and we have been asked to fill in a target setting sheet that will eventually track the children through the years. The one for Reception was not appropriate (as the four coloured boxes didn't correspond with the four colours in the FSC!!). Anyway, we decided we would come up with our own criteria. We took an ELG and worked backwards (as we knew that we needed to make them adequate steps to keep in line with the NC levels). The example we started with was to be able to blend CVCs by the end of Rec. This suggests that the step before would be to identify initial and final sounds in words. Th…

Qualifications: Fs Co-ordinator
by Guest- 5 replies

Hey all. Was wondering if you could clarify something for me. What warrants enough experience to take on the Foundation Stage Co-ordinator role? My school is a three form entry school with an 80 place nursery. I was an NQT last year and this is my second year in the same Reception class. I see myself as a very forward thinking individual who is really focussed on developing my professional development as well as Reception. The current FS co-ordinator is retiring soon and I am not under the misguided opinion that when she goes I'll be able to step into her shoes. I feel I have been a leading role in the FS at school. My opinion is often and regularly drawn u…

Hi it's me again thought i'd call upon your knowledge and experience! I am about to send reading books home to my reception class children and was wondering about word games to develop their understanding of concepts of words and how to put them together to make sentences. Does any one have any good ideas or do you feel it would be too much to send home with reading books?

Child 'ratios' In Reception

Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone can help me with a slight 'management' issue. I'm an NQT in Reception working with an experienced Nursery Nurse who is lovely and works full time in the class with me. However the other day another teacher asked if she could 'borrow' her for the afternoon and whilst I said that there would be no problem with this my nursery nurse questioned the fact that I would be 'on my own' with the class. Whilst I know that in Preschool there has to be a high nursery nurse staff to child ratio I was under the impression that in reception there can be a teacher on their own with up to a class of 30 children and that a full time nursery nu…

Help!

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone could help. As I'm an NQT i am being observed by someone from our local council on 30th Nov!!! They are coming in to observe in the afternoon (tired irritable children is running through my mind!) and I wanted to plan a lesson which would impress. As my topic is night and day i was concidering having a dark area in the classroom and allowing the children to explore with different light sources. I am worried that it'll all go wrong - has anyone any ideas of good focused activities maybe linking to a story which worked well - any area of learning! Thanks
