Literacy And Numeracy In Reception

I am an NQT in 1 of 3 reception classrooms at present and we are currently in the process of 'revamping' our foundation stage practice due to a high staff turnover throughout the school - with a head and deputy who feel passionately about 'raising standards' especially in Literacy and Numeracy. I was just wondering how people are structuring the sessions at present? I am currently planning for 10 min carpet 20 2x focus groups (me and NN) and 'independent activities' (in my mind play!) Our deputy however is quite keen for us to follow the planning of the rest of the school (that is the format) which implies a lot longer on the carpet (oral mental and main tea…

Slamming Doors

Hi everyone! This is my first post on this great website and I hope someone out there can help me. We are trying very hard to have 'free flow' between outdoors and indoors all day in my reception classroom but the thing that really worries me is the classroom door as it swings shut after someone has gone through. A week does not go by without some kind of incident - fortunately the worst squashed finger to date has been mine. We have tried the cheap plastic wedge thing on the top of the door but it often gets dislodged by the spped ofthe closing door. I'm also worried about the gap between the door and door frame. I thought i read about a product called 'soft slam'…

Hi Guys, As an NQT i know i am not supposed to have any serious behaviour problems in my class but unfortunately its not worked out like that and i have a problem. I have one child with a number of problems but the one im most concerned with is her behaviour. (please note i have a reception class) She refuses to sit down with other children and constantly disrupts any carpet time i have, she has hit both myself, my learning assistant and fellow pupils, she damages school equipment, shouts and swears, amonst other things. She comes from a troubled background which i know is probably the reason for this behaviour but i need help. The school and LEA are involved …

Early Years Staff Meeting
by Guest- 6 replies

Calling out to all experienced Reception practitioners. I am a Reception teacher in a 1 form entry school and have been asked by my head to present a staff meeting to all staff about 'The Foundation Stage'. This to to make all members of staff aware of how the curriculum works, assessment, etc as i'm sure some staff have no idea that we don't follow the National Curriculum!! I was hoping for some advice and ideas of the kind of things i could include in the meeting. I don't want to make it so that it is 45 minutes of me constantly talking. If anyone has any ideas of practical ways i could introduce things, or if anyone has done a meeting like this before i would b…

Powerpoint Resources

There are some useful Powerpoint resources on the website of the school I used to work at. They are really good and include music for the rhymes. The only problem is that many of them were created using PP 2002 and if you have an earlier version some of the functionality will be lost. They are certainly worth a look. http://www.millenniumschools.co.uk/pub/red...html?1090080686 Ange
