Help! I am running out of ideas to get one girl in my class to join in with activites on the carpet (she is 5 in a reception class of 27! and growing by the day!- 2 newies today!) she will come and join us but not sit with us, always fiddling with anything she can get her hands on - i've tried giving her a picture velcroed to the carpet to sit on but she just ends up taking it with her whilst she shuffles across the carpet and other children! i don't want to give her a cushion because feel that the rest of the children woulkd want one too and funds won't run to 27 cushions!?!? she is extremely attention seeking and very stubborn, the younger of a twin and therefore …

Help!

I'm at the end of my tether and it's only the second week back!!! I have a boy in my class who is causing a great deal of concern. Here goes . . . . He cannot sit still, whether on the carpet or on a chair. When on the floor he takes shoes and socks off. When at a table, he swipes all the toys of the floor. When running around the classroom he finds other things to throw on the floor. Everything is put into his mouth. He will go to the book corner to choose a book, rubs it back and forth on the carpet and then puts it in his mouth to chew. After being told to pick the things up he has thrown, he will then repeat the swiping on the floor again. He does not res…

Hi everyone, I've currently got a little boy in my class with autism and am having difficulty thinking of activities to give him. He doesn't speak yet and rarely focuses/shows an interest in anything. He seems to enjoy bubbles landing on him and is vaguely interested in the cars but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas they might have used in a Reception class that might grab his attention. Have been trying a schedule with him with picture symbols (having used all of the links on the autistic symbols topic, thankyou those were really useful!) but its not really working. He prefers to throw them on the floor! Am also having trouble in whole class sessions as he is v…

Wow! We are famous now as we get two mentions in this weeks TES on page 28. Sue Palmer writes about the problems with being made to continue formal learning in Reception, and cites the problem one of our members had which led to her resignation from her job. I hope you have seen it Steve?

Nqt In Reception

Hello all. I'm an NQT in Reception without an Early Years co-ordinator and, as such, have struggled writing my planning as I have been unable to find the relevant folders anywhere; no-one seems to know anything about my year. Last years planning is around but a few things have changed so is now only partially relevant, such as the addtion of Ruth Miskin. The problem now is that it has been hinted that I will be asked to take on the role of Early Years co-ordinator in the near future (weeks rather than months). Should I be expected to take on this role? I'm struggling keeping on top of the work load as it (it's all very daunting) and now they're suggesting all …

A bit of a strange request really. I work in a school with two reception classes 53+ children and a small outdoor area. We want to develop the area so the children can go out and play in the area unsupervises.... but need ideas of how we monitor who is outside. I don't believe in having set groupings in Reception... but this can make it difficult to make sure that all children get a turn at activities fairly. Any ideas on a system that the children would understand and be able to use relatively independently would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance L

Hi all. Am having a travel agents in my role-play area for the next few weeks in school but in the past it has not been very inspiring for the children. I already provide a pretend computer, brochures, till, tickets, posters, desk and writing equipment etc, but was wondering if anyone had used anything different in their setting. Would be grateful of any ideas as am planning now ready for next week. Thanks in advance Tinyone
