Planning

I need some advice.I've been teaching a reception class part-time for five months with no previous experience.I've been slightly disillusioned in that the expectations of the Senior management team and those of the Foundation stage stepping stones seem to be at odds.Teachers are chastised if they don't hear the children read individually three times a week, children are meant to complete a piece of handwriting practice every day.A piece of Breakthrough work has to be done in some form or other every day.We are not allowed to give the children snack indoors as teachers have been told "It's a waste of teaching time."We have book scrutinies every eight weeks so there is more…

Planning For Outside Area
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to develop outside play area. We are fairly well resourced and their is good provision for physical development but now need to widen provision to bring in other areas of learning, particularly CLL and MD. I mainly need ideas on independent choice activities for children but any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks

Hi there! I need some help! During my first year teaching practice i was in a reception class and the teacher had this fab pointer stick for big books. It was a hand shape with one finger pointing and i have since seen this in videos of early years settings during my training. I foolishly forgot to ask where she got this from as finishing my degree seemed so far away. As i am about to start my first post i am keen to access one (by the way it it nothing fancy, just a hand lamintated and fixed onto a stick) I have searched everywhere! does anyone now where i get get a copy of this to make my own. It it obviously a literacy teaching resourse-i just cant find it!!!…

I am an NQT starting in Reception and through reading a lot of articles and by reading posts on here I want to teach JP. I have managed to persuade the school to let me do it, which is the first step!! However, some staff had made comments that it won't work because of the schools Lancashire accent! Any comments on that please. Also, they do the individual letter sounds in the schools nursery, but it has never been carried on before, which is what I intend to do. Should I introduce them at the same pace as the handbook even though some children will have learnt the sounds already? One more question - what resources can I make to help the children? An…

Concept Mapping
by Guest- 14 replies

I have been asked for my views on how I can introduce some form of concept mapping in Reception as an assessment tool. The idea is that we will collect children's knowledge of our theme/topic at the beginning of the half term on this map and then again at the end. The end product will demonstrate the learning that has taken place and the value we have added. Does anyone out there do this already in any shape or form. I'm not sure how best to do it in a way that will work and be useful for the children. I don't want to be a Luddite but feel reluctant to take on something for the sole purpose of another 'senior' adult coming into Reception and being able to tic…

I have been a Qualified NNEB for a long time. I have only stopped working with under 5's to have my own two children. I have kept up with all the courses and have a wealth of experience. I would dearly love to broaden my experience and embark on a career to , eventually become a teaching assistant. How do I break into school. Every post I go for is taken by a parent who has done voluntary work at the school before. I need to work so can't take this route. Help!!!

Gervais Phinn

hi just had our NQT conference with guest speaker Gervais Phinn - he is superb! if you ever get the chance to see him i highly recommend it. he re-affirms what we all believe teaching SHOULD be about and had us in stitches all day with his stories of being a teacher, headteacher and school inspector (he resigned as an Ofsted inspector due to his disagreement about league tables and SATs etc.) he also writes books which are very amusing.
