Why Are They Just Playing?! 1 2

That was a comment made to me about my reception class. Its so frustrating that some people in Key Stage 1 still excpect to see formal work in Reception. I cannot believe that people still have this attitude, 'they should be writing not playing in the sand'!!! Give me strength. So who is not doing any play and doing literacy and numeracy all morning? Because apparently thats what I am supposed to do, oh and get rid of all the 'play' things now they are nearly Year 1! Sorry for the rant, it just really upset me. I am sure that other people have these problems too.

bit of a long shot I think, but is there anyone either doing the GTP or mentoring on the GTP next year? I have been asked to mentor a year 1 GTP which means I will be teaching year 1 and nursery next year (!) (though hopefuuly not at the same time). It would be nice to be able to compare notes, but Im not aware of anyone mentioning it here before.

Glad to See that the new site is up and running but I am wondering if I need to change my settings as some of the print is really small and I am finding it difficult to read?

Reports

Can anyone help? I am not using the profiles for reporting to parents this year, & have fairly free rein in how I set out my reports. Do I need to have 2 sections for PSED and General Progress/comments, or should I combine them into one section. I'm a bit worried that I may repeat myself with 2 sections but may miss something out with only 1 (though it would be bigger, & I can't think what exactly would be missing!) Any advice from members' own experience? Dianne xxx

I am going to be moving from year six to start a foudnation stage unit in September. We currently have a nursery class and a reception class but due to falling roles will need to have one unit. I need any information anyone can offer on running a unit please; planning, assessing, grouping, differentiation etc. All contributions will be accepted with greatful thanks. I have been a nursery nurse and have some ideas, but things have changed dramatically since then.

I recently visited this place in Huddersfield and was absolutely amazed these people have got it so right! Well done to whoevever came up with this idea. Has anyone else been as impressed as we were? Does anyone know the background to it ? We all went back to work very enthusiastic which is unusual at this time of year. Our areas have changed dramatically back to the way we all trained and have been wanting to do for a very long time our practice is changing and with the support from this place our head is making all the right noises.

Cloudlands

Hi- I have to prepare a half hour of teaching with a mixed rec yr 1 class (on anything I want) and was thinking of basing it on the book Cloudlands. Has anyone got any ideas for activities? I was thinking with the focus on more play in year 1, to perhaps set up areas to act out living in the clouds- maybe shaving foam and small world people, I have a big blue net thing and a group could go in that and act out a cloud scene... Hmm, there are 27 inc a child with cerebral palsy... Any other ideas for activities or has anyone used this book before? Or indeed yr 1 objectives I can link it to? Thanks
