hi i thought i would copy Susans topic intro! how do other people organise their reading? I'm a Reception teacher and think my school places a great emphasis on 1-1 reading! Just wondered how other schools compare. all my children need to have their reading book changed twice and week and be heard by an adult twice a week, until recently i was expected to hear them all read in a week. this was taking 2 afternoons a week and resembled a conveyor belt system! In addition to this I spend a morning doing group reading! I have now eased the situation by negotiating with the Head and hearing half of the class one week and half the next ( my TA and parent helpers hear the…

I will soon be planning for after Whit and we are off to Martin Mere to look at the bird sanctuary. Lots of ducks, ducks and more ducks. I have plenty of activities planned but wondered if anyone had some really good ideas for investigations about birds, feathers or flight?

Whole School Inset On Fs

Hi I am running a whole school (TA's included) training session on the FS (only a hour and a half slot!!). The reason for this is that there has been increasing unhappiness among the rest of the school with what the FS are doing the Year 1 teacher is the most put -out - I guess she feels pressured by KS1 SATS). I know I have been accused of not teaching them anything!! My head's solution is for me to run training as she feels the comments being made are due to a lack of understanding of what is appropriate Early years education. Anyway, that's the background - has anyone any ideas on what activities I can do? I have a powerpoint presentation to show the staff (its one I s…

Individual Reading?
by Guest- 1 reply

As if we didn't have enough to deal with (!) I was wondering how you all managed to hear individual children read in the Reception class with all the organising of: focused input/group work/independent learning/free-choice/outdoor play/observations/ and oh yes, interacting with the children! My NQT year is proving to be a neverending rollercoaster ride! We manage (between the Reception team) to more or less hear each child read throughout the whole week (half the class having a group reading session one week and then swopping the following week etc). Am just querying how you do it. Am at a loss whether our approach is the best possible with the children we ha…

Transition From Fs To Year 1

have had a meeting today with our attached advisor from the LEA who is wanting to find out how schools in our area prepare FS children for Y1. Spoke to her about what we do, but has got me thinking am I doing enough? and are the Y1 teachers really understanding what the Fs curriculum is about! Am really keen to explore this and imporve what we are doing. what are other schools out there doing? We are in an area where quite a few of our children will not have achieved the early learning goals, and where they ideally need in Y1 to still be working from the FS curriculum. any ideas or comment gratefully received!
