Well today began as a bad day as I worried about the inappropriate practice I see in some settings by dedicated and hard-working practitioners who are not able to work in the way they wish because of top down pressure, or in some cases are not really aware of appropriate practice. (I have been out moderating for the Pupil Profile) I remembered the Primary Strategy training day and being told that all my children should be acheiving the early learning goals by the end of Reception and there was no excuse if they weren't. Then... I read the TES and in their supplement on the PS, there was an article by Sue Palmer talking about Lesley Staggs and Foundation Stage Learnin…

Foundation Stage Manager

Would really appreciate some responses from people who are foundation stage managers or co-ordinators. Was promoted to FS manager at my school in september as the previous manager retired. I work at a school with 2 reception classes of 25 children, we don't have a nursery. I am in my third year of teaching and have been teaching reception for 2 years, so it is still quite new. I am very confident with what I am doing in the classroom, but feel slightly unsure if I'm doing enough as the FS manager! have been asked by my head to set up a co-ordinator file (all co-ordinators have been asked to do this) and he has given me some guidelines as to what ot should contain. W…

hi all, we're trying to encourage our children to write. I firmly belief they need some skills, phonic knowledge and handwriting/ fine motor skills as pre-requisites. I have seen some writing displayed as a stimulus on a wall near the writing table, BUT it has been written phonetically which personally I don't feel is valid although I would except it as a transcript of children's own work(it is not this, definitely a teacher example), and would be happy to accept it from the children themselves. What do you do? Am I old fashioned? I don't want to be critical if this is generally acceptable. HELP please!!! Susan

Handa's Surprise

At school we are having a Literacy Day in the last week of Term. Have at least a week to work around a book - plan and create a display in the hall at school and then think of ideas for parents to take part in when we open the school to them to see our work. also need to have lots of ideas to keep the children busy on the day (although i suppose this could be a repeat of activities already compleeted?) I have chosen to do Handa's surprise to tie in with our Africa topic which is working towards a performance at the Staff Development centre the day before - in front of other schools involved in the dance, art, music project! HAs any one used this book and got any …

I have a number of children this year who are badly in need of lots of gross motor skills activities. We've done lots of the usual - playing with balls, bean bags, riding bikes, balancing etc. Anyone got something different please? Thanks, Jess

Hi everyone, Do you do them? We've always done them from Spring term onwards, using the Reception HFW's, differentiated accordingly of course. But now I'm not so sure with the change towards more practical based stuff. I'd also like to know what everyone is doing about number formation this year! Thanks, Jess

The Post Office

We are setting up a post office as our structured play area this half term. (F/stage unit-3-5 year olds). I've only done it once before. So far we have walked to the nearest post box and posted cards they made for their parents/carers. We have invited one of the dad's who is a post man to be our 'guest speaker' and are having the usual-envelopes, stamps etc for sale. A post box and other writing resources in the writing area. We will cover weight through parcels....just wondered if anyone had any additional ideas/good ways of sustaining the children's interest? Thanks Cath

Pre Foundation Stage Curriculum

I am currently undertaking a Foundation Degree in Early Years Child Care and Education and am finding it quite difficult to find information on the legislation and policy for schools prior to the current legislation i.e. Ofsted took over the inspection of pre-schools etc. in 2000 from Social Services - what about schools - who controlled the school environment before Ofsted and when did Ofsted come into being. The 1988 Education Reform Act saw the birth of National Curriculum, again, what came before this. I have many questions in this vein, could anyone suggest literature or websites that will answer these questions. I hope I am not asking too much. Juli…
