Literacy Plea!

Can anybody give me some advice on how I should be delivering literacy in reception. I know we don't have to implement the full hour until the last half term before Y1, but thought we had to cover all the elements throughout the day. I tried in the Autumn term to use the QCA later foundation stage medium planning - but I found it incredibly confusing and not teacher-friendly. I have looked at the Hamilton Trust site, and Literacy Matters sites too - but the tasks set for the more able groups on Hamilton are way beyond anything my children could attempt/achieve. I would like to deliver literacy through our topic work - currently food - so lots of recipes, shopping l…

Schema Theory In Reception
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi all! A plea to any reception teachers that incorporate schema theory into their teaching and learning. Please tell me about anything that you do, however small that relates to this or know of anyone that could help (including nursery colleagues). I know of nurseries and early excellence centres that use schema theory to help analyse children's interests and support and extend their learning but noone seems to be doing anything with reception children that I know of. Schemes For Foundation Stage
by Guest- 10 replies

Hi Everyone, I am just beginning the process of searching for new published schemes for literacy and numeracy. Our foundation stage needs a complete overhaul as things have changed very little since the introduction to the NNS and NLS and the FS document. If anyone has used any good schemes that they could recommend we are looking for both literacy and numeracy. We would also be interested in using books that are topic based and include the 6 areas of learning. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it as I need to get sample copies now to get approval and funding! Thanks so much Gaynor

I'm a NQT teaching in a Reception class. I would really appreciate some advice on how to organise my class! i've just had my new intake of January children so now have a full class of 30 (15 started in September). With a smaller class I was able to easily work with a group whilst the other children happily and constructively played within the classroom and were able to choose what they wanted to do or would complete a structured independent activity. Now I have 30 children I realise how small my classroom is and the noise level (not surprisingly) has increased considerably. I do spend time talking about using "our quiet voices" but it seems that often they are so absorbed…

Managing Outdoor Play

Does anyone share their playground between Nursery and Reception? It would be intersting to know how you manage your outdoor time. At present we have three time slots in the morning for Nursery and the two Reception classes to go out and then repeat this in the afternoon. We would like to explore other ways of managing our outdoor play time so that the children mix more, creating more of a "foundation Stage feel!" : Anyone got any good ideas?

Morning Entry To Class In Reception
by Guest- 6 replies

I was wondering what other recep. teachers do first thing in the morning - at my last school the parents dropped the children into class from 8.45 onwards, & we started the day by choosing activities. I used to moan about starting my day before everyone else but the children were almost all happy in the morning. This year we have lined up in the playground at 9.00 and come in for registration. A few of the children have started crying at this time since Christmas, and I think we would benifit from doing a more informal entry. I just thought it may help me to get it right if other people could share what they do in the mornings! Thanks very much, Dianne…
