Reception/year 1 Classes

As I search through the job pages and other forums I notice that there are an increasing number of schools asking for teachers of a year R/year 1 mixed class. What does anyone here think about this? Anyone here teach in one and how do you go about doing FS and NC stuff? I was tempted to go for such a job, but then decided against it, as I didn't think I'd be able to give the children what they deserved. Just thought I'd ask what people thought or have experienced on this topic!

Hi I have a boy in my new class who has learnt letterland in his previous setting. He recognises at least 10 letters by their letterland name. Does letterland have any phonic basis? Only 1 other boy has any phonic knowledge. A few others know a few letter names and may recognise letters as 'my name'. I have never understood the logic of letterland, in fact was instrumental in moving away from it when I joined my school several years ago SO does anyone know how I can expect this boy to react to jolly phonics, is he basically a non starter with phonics, as the majority, or will I need to beware of causing confusion?

I would like to know whether other people have the same problem as me with professional development courses in the Foundation Stage. In our LEA we have to attend 4 days of Early Years courses per year but I find that the courses run are mainly aimed at Private nurseries, TAs or playgroups and are an insult to the intelligence of a qualified teacher (sorry nurseries, TAs and playgroups) The last one I went to on Emergent writing asked us to write down the 6 areas of learning in the ELGs and most are just to read through pieces of paper which would take us approxiamtely 10 minutes if left to our own devices.

When To Introduce Jolly Phonics?

I'm starting as an NQT in reception in September and am after some jolly phonics advice - mainly when do you start to introduce it? We've had the lectures at uni and I've asked advice from a number of reception teachers but everyone has different opinions - varying from the second week to after half term. Please give me some advice! Thanks in advance. Annette OH yeah, they all start within the first week of september.

New Curriculum For Y1
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi, After, a rather long day at uni on wednesday, in the module route specific - foundation, our lecturer briefly mentioned that there are to be radical changes to the year 1 curriculum. After a brief disscussion on this, yes the concept of this (making it more play based instead of structured teaching) is one that i personally would like with open arms. However does anyone know more about the content of it and when its comming into force? Jo

After spending most of the last two terms planning to make Year 1 a transition year from FS to KS1, I found out today that the LEA wants to meet with me to talk about funding us to run as a pilot scheme for them! At last someone with a bit of nonce seems to have taken notice and not a moment too soon! Sorry to go on about this but I'm just so pleased I'm finally going to be able to have a goat making a difference - I don't think the fact that it will probably come with a pile of extra paperwork has sunk in yet - I had to tell someone who would appreciate it
