Girls!

Arrgghh! Tis the time of year when the children are tired and ready for the holidays. However, over the past week or so, I have been having problems with one of the girls in my class and her relationships with others. Although she is one of the oldest, she is not as mature as others or independent. She is disorganised (never remembers to put her glasses on each morning - although the rest of the children now remind her), doesn't quite have a special best friend and has had issues with other girls in the class last year in Reception and now in Year 1. She is physical towards others - pushing or hitting them out of her way - and generally immature towards others -…

Hi all we have just taken delivery of some lovely story sacks, plus some puppets from Puppets By Post (we are going to make up some rhyme bags too. We purchased these with the intention of using them as a story sack library so that parents can support their children at home with literacy and communication skills. The obvious worry is that not all parts will come back! Has anyone established a story sack library before and if so how did you manage to ensure that things are taken care of? We had an idea to recruit a parent helper to act as a 'librarian' and check in and check out the sacks, but would love to hear if anyone has any further advise for doing this.

just wondering if people could help me, currently some children in my class are obsessed with sand timers and i wondering if anyone had any ideas of what i could do to extend this learning or add variety? currently they have races with the sand timers to see which one will finish first, i have provided them with timers of different amounts and ones that are the same. We have also talked about why one is faster or slower and they also use them to take turns on the bikes. i was thinking about providing them with different types of timers and using a timer on the whitboard at tidy up time instead of music. I also wondered about doing how mnay starjumps can you do fo…

Hi, What do people do with the children's learning journals at the end of this term? The Year 1 teacher at my school asks for the profile assessment scores and is happy to meet with me to discuss the children's progress in detail, but does not necessarily want the journals that contain all the photographs and evidence. Do people give them to parents, pass them on to the Year 1 teachers or just 'keep them safe' with copies of reports and other information? I'd be interested to know what people do. Is there a recommendation from Early Years advisors?

What Resources Can You Not Live Without For 4 Year Olds?
by Guest heleng- 6 replies

We have been very fortunate to have been given some funding for September. As our intake pattern has been changed and we are taking all of our Reception children in September (all full time within 3 days!) and we are expanding to two form entry (60 children) we have been given some money to 'provide to meet the needs of the youngest children in full time school'. So, we are going to be buying some bread and butter resources- more small world bits, interesting things to count etc as we have a second class to kit out but would like some ideas for what we need to provide for the youngest children in our classes. So what resources do your 4 year olds like and what ca…

Hi, I am after some more advice about outdoor play in a mixed reception and year 1 class. So after a discussion with my head - I am not fencing off any play area. In her previous school the children went outside for an hour everyday, then the resources were packed away, and they didn't go outside again. I am not sure about this, as in my head there should be freeflow throughout the day. Also what do other schools do re-packing everything away for playtime and lunchtime? Is there anything that you leave outside or is it a case of putting everything back in the boxes at these times? Also how do you cover planning for the 6 areas, especially if you are packing everything a…

Handwriting Schemes
by Guest- 2 replies

I need to source a new handwriting scheme - we have used Nelson from the mid 1990's but don't have a single complete copy in our school - it's available from Amazon but was rather expensive when I last looked! So we have decided to look at a completely new scheme - Penpals and Jungle Write (similiar to write dance ) have been suggested but wondered if anyone knew of anyone others for me to consider or use these and what are they like?

Hi, I had the new reception intake in school this week for visits. It was really lovely to meet them all! Now, one little boy ha stuck in my mind. He had an almost obsession with making sure the door was closed. We have a door that goes from the classroom to the cloakroom and it was this door that he was watching. Children were in and out taking off jumpers and the like and the door is usually open, but he kept closing it. When people came in from outside he would watch to make sure the outer door (self closing) was shut then came through and closed the inner one. He didn't really play with others, although played alongside with me and another little boy with the…

Outdoors - Fenced Off Or Not?
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi, I am meeting with my head on monday to discuss revamping our outdoor area - we have a canopy which then goes on to the playground which the whole school use. I have previously had this area fenced off - but with high fences, that needed screwing together, and they have to be moved a lot for netball games or when we have other schools visiting for our country dancing festival. I, personally, think it being fenced off is a good idea as it gives the children a clear space to play in, and also means that all the toys do not have to be packed away for lunch and playtime. However, other members of staff hate the fencing, saying it makes the playground smaller and doesn't l…
