Names On Board?
by Guest- 8 replies

hi Can I have your opinions on this query I have I'm in reception (worked as a NN for 10 years now in my 2nd year of teaching) and the school behaviour policy states children's names are written on the board if they dont follow the rules. hurt each other, don't follow instructions etc. I have been asked to start this in reception in the final term 'to get the children used to it for year 1'. I feel this is not appropriate as the children are learning how to behave and writing their name for all to see publicly humiliates them and I can see it damaging some children's self esteem. (also if I followed it to the letter I'd have half the class on the board!) In cl…

Using Fs Strategies In Year 1

Hi, I am currently in reception and have been asked to move into Year 1 next year, to set up Year 1 in the same style as Reception. At the moment I have Child initiated activities within the classroom and then work with focus groups and for the child initiated areas, I have long term plans that set out the possible learning opportunities in these areas. I would like to do the same for Year One and I know I have seen skills based activity sheets showing possible learning opportunities in the learning environment, but I can't seem to find an example. If anyone has one I would greatly appreciate it Thanks

Im interested to know if you have any sort of core texts in your schools, for Reception and years 1 and 2, to avoid the "we've done that" syndrome where children only experience a few fairy stories, for example, rather than a wide range. Do you have a range of books that are used in each year group?

Hi I am moving up to Year 1 with my class in September. Whilst this will obviously be great for continuity I also want to make sure we have some newness to mark our transition. In particular (as I've been based in EYs and primarily nursery for a long time) I want to expand my repertoire of songs and activities for settling children at transition times. Would be really grateful to hear any of your favourites/ things that work for you and your year 1 class. Thanks Nsunshine.

Hi everyone, Not quite sure what to say as am in a state of shock. I've just had an email from my headteacher to inform me that a little girl in my class (reception) mum has suddenly died yesterday while travelling back from a holiday. The mum had been battling cancer for a few years. Dad has emailed to say that the little girl wants to come to school tomorrow (we have been on half term the past 2 weeks). Does anyone has any advice on what I should do to support this lovely family at this tragic time? Thank you all Chickpea xx

Y1 Topic Ideas

Hi there I will be teaching Y1 in September with the job of implementing our transition policy/plan. Because of the changes that will come with this I've been asked to dream up some topics for Y1 to cover over the year. (Our head is very keen on FS approach to learning through Y1 & pushing for it to be introduced into Y2). I've looked at QCA schemes for Y1 from the standards site and have been trying to link the subjects together with the Science topics as the main thread (Science very high on SDP), but have come to a stand still as can't make it all fit (nothing ever does that easily!). Juat wondered if anyone had a 'topic' approach in Y1 and would be willing to …

Ta Interview
by Guest- 5 replies

HI all There has been a lot on here recently about interviews and going for new jobs - all for teaching posts). My TA who i have worked with for 7 years has decided to drop a couple of days (she has got 2 new grandsons and wants to spend more time with them so i understand) I am a job share and we have worked so well as a team for these past 7 years it will be hard to have someone new. We thought that we need to have continuity in the week so we couldn't have a ta work with me for my days and a new one on my friends day so my current TA will work in the middle of the week and the school has advertised for 2 days. Tha head has asked us to come up with some quest…

by Guest- 7 replies

Hi! i am starting a new job in september in a year 1 class. I have never had experience with year 1, and i am currently working as a teacher in nursery. I was wondering how your year 1 classrooms work? Do you have continuous provision? How does this work with getting everything covered that needs to be? What areas do you have in your classroom? Sorry about all of the questions, i just want to make sure i do it right! my current school believe that year 1 should be sat working all of the time and have no play, so i need some advice from elsewhere! hope someone people can give me some advice! Thanks x

Hi Next september will be the first time for our school that we will be accomodating chn who have just turned 4. They normally start in the term in which they will turn 5. We have been told to look for the Essex standards of Early years which should support us in checking our building is ready for the Early Entry. I have searched on EGfL which is where we were told this doc could be found, but I can find nothing. Cant actually find the Early Years section anymore at all!! Im hoping most of it will be obvious things that we need to check/change but just need to clarify for my own piece of mind. Is anyone else in this position? does anyone know if this document even exist…
