Outdoor Play Balancing Equipment

Hi everyone, There's something that has been driving me mad for ages and I wondered if anyone could help. When I did supply years ago I worked in several FS classes who had a particular set of outdoor equipment that was fantastic. I've spent hours googling to try and find it but have not even come close. I'll do my best to describe it... There were probably about 10 pieces all in chunky, hollow, brightly coloured plastic. The pieces could be fitted together in different way to make a raised walkway about a foot off the ground. The different pieces I can remember were: a zig zag piece that could be used as steps up to the walkway or as a bumpy plank; a large circle …

Capital Letters

HiI I teach a Year R class and am not sure how much emphasis I should put on capital letter formation. Do people introduce it at the same time as lower case-ie as you introduce each sound during phonics sessions? Some of my children are finding our cursive difficult enough and still need lots of pre writing skill practice, but our Year 1 teacher is 'up in arms' because the class she inherited from me last September don't know all their capitals. What do others do?

Hi all I have been thinking about our provision of these two areas of learning and realise that we lack ideas and more probably the know how and inspiration to provide children with opportunities to explore science and d&t activities. We do the usual craft based stuff for D&T (hole punches, split pins, staplers etc) but would love to explore more problem solving 'exciting' stuff! I have looked at Teacher Tom's blog which is fab (particularly the drawbots which we are about to try). I wondered how other settings approach these two areas and what type of activities you do to encourage a strong exploratory attitude coupled with problem solving. It's a woman's wo…

How are the books---non fiction----organised in your school library. Do you use a dewey classification or colour coding system or something different? Is it easy for the children and staff to access and to maintain? I have the unenviable job of sorting this, we have recently revamped our library and it is a really lovely, an enlarged cosy book corner in lots of respects but I need to get the books sorted in a friendly way! Any thoughts much appreciated!

Outdoor Storage - Any Ideas?
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi everyone, I teach reception and have a small outdoor area attached that we use everyday. Our faithful outside storage shed has finally had its day - thank goodness (was so sick of everything getting mouldy) and I have been given some money (unspecified amount at this stage) to purchase some new outdoor storage for our class. My ideal scenario would be to get a series of child height weatherproof cupboard style containers that the children can access/put away resources each day. However, I don't really know where to start with this search as so far I've only found those dark green P.E style storage sheds or storage not suitable to be kept outside. Does anyone ha…

Behaviour

Please someone help, Ive been teaching for ten years and love my job with a Reception class but is it just me or are kids coming in with less and less respect. I have a boy that says no to me consistently every time i ask him to do something. I have been very firm with him and send him to time out every time he is refusing me, but it is driving me insane. I am thinking about doing a behaviour reward for him but part of me thinks no, he needs to learn first to do as he is told. Rant over!!
