How are you finding your children this year? Attainment and concentration seems to be lower than ever in our yr1 cohort this year. Is this what everyone else is experiencing. At the same time our new reception children also seem to have very very low baseline score so is the norm or is it peculiar to our school/ cohorts?

Just wondering if anyone else does P4C (philosophy for Children) in their reception class? The headteacher wants to role this out across the school, we have had a inset training on this but just wondered how others adapted it to suit early years. Basically p4c is introducing a stimuli to children and letting them come up with a question, then discussing this question in a safe environment where their is no right and wrong answers. Thanks Emma

Kids N Dads

Hi After the holidays we want to start a Kids and Dads project. The aim of the project will be to get more dads involved in their children's education by coming to various hands on activities during the school day. The main focus will be to develop the children's reading, writing and numeracy skills by using their dads, grandads, uncles or other males as role models. We want to enthuse the dads as well by offering activities that will inspire them to get involved! For example in the past we have run Superhero days where the dads and children come dressed as their favourite character. Whilst at school, the dads and children took part in den making, messy play, con…

Hi all, I am new to this forum as am new to reception this year and have already gleaned some fab advice from you all from lurking! I cannot find a forum post which has addressed this but I'm sure it has been discussed at some point so I will ask the question myself. I have a fantastic classroom space (2 large classrooms put together) and outside area which is safe and secure and cannot be reached by the general public or be escaped from. I operate the class as freeflow for most of the day (btw getting nippy now with the door wide open!) and 8 children are allowed out at any one time. I have a full time TA with me and up until now the children have freeflowed inside or o…

Forest Walks

Hi all, I am very lucky to work in an area where there are many woods within little people's walking distance. I only have 12 chn in the afternoon and thought I would make the most of this by taking a walk to the woods and having some fun. I thought we could do a range of things from rhymes, exploration, finding plants from their pictures and a leaf collecting exercise onto double sided sticky tape as well as making mini-beast houses from twigs. But was wondering if anyone else had some more fabulous ideas? We are not a forestry sch as cannot afford it, but would love to have the opportunity to try some of the activities. Many thanks in advance Amanda

Reading Parents Information Board

Hi all Ive been asked to create a display around reading to give our parents some information on how they could support their children at home. We have a lot of parents that dont really read with their children at home for many reasons and ideally I want to inspire them to read with their children even just once in a while. Any ideas what I could include in the display for example useful websites and tips etc. Im also going to display our bookstart books with some ideas for my reception parents and pictures of children reading in school but then im a bit stuck Thanks for reading! Evening everyone, What an exhausting start to the week! I have presently got a class of 30 Reception Class children and boy are they a manic lot. They are always going to be loud and that is fine with me as long as it is productive. However over the last couple of weeks and especially today, they have been totally manic e.g. > Shouting at each other > Running around the classroom > Diving on top of each other on the carpet > hurting each other > general silliness I have tried all the obvious e.g. class rules, rewards for individuals and for whole class etc. Basically I now feel like I am nagging them and that makes me feel bad. Anyone got some goo…

Have I got this right? In KS1 the only completely statutory documents are the NC Programmes of Study? With the Primary Framework being something that you can use to help meet the NC requirements (doing 4 weeks of Stories about Fantasy Worlds etc.) but you don't have to? Or am I completely wrong and you do have to use both? Except for a brief PGCE placement I haven't taught in KS1 yet, but will need to find a new job soon and expect I may find myself in Y1 or 2 so would like to get my head round it all in advance! I know if I do move up I would prefer to continue planning from the children's interests and it does seem the Framework could be a bit restrictive fo…
