I have a little girl in my class who I am not sure sees me as the authority figure! I am wondering whether this is because I am quite young. So is her mum and from what others have told me, she is allowed to get her own way at home a lot. I think she thinks she can do the same with me!! My TA is much older that me and this little girl will do what she is asked first time. Howver with me, I will have to ask her 3/4 times before she does the same sort of thing. Advice please on how to handle and manage this! At the mo I am currently turning things into a race which she loves e.g. "Lets see if you can get the toys away in 10 seconds etc" But I can't go on that w…

Hi, I am due to be subject manager of Religious Education this year and I want to develop the cross curricular links with ICT and other subjects. I was wondering whether anyone had any ideas or whether anyone used any really good websites that I could take a look at. They can be aimed at any age as I will be in charge of the subject from Reception to Year 6. Thanks

Help...how Can I Keep My Ta

After having such an overwhelming amount of support on a different issue I feel a bit cheeky asking for more advice.... having moved into reception this year for the first time with a job share in the same situation (never having worked together before) we have been blessed with a terrific TA. The sort that has done things before you ask and that has ideas and motivation way beyond her job description. She has transformed a drab classroom that has suffered years of neglect into something rather great! On top of that I like her and we have fun (despite some challenging behavior in our classroom). She is the continuity between my job share and I and we all make a really…

Pre Writing Activities

I started teaching phonics with my class this week and alongside learning the sounds we also teach letter formation. Although I had noticed it before, starting phonics has really hightened my awareness that many of my children are just not ready for letter formation yet. I have children who are grasping their pencil right at the top and others who don't even look like they have done any mark making before. I have decided that I am not going to worry too much about writing yet but just concentrate on learning the sounds but I would like some suggestions of good activities to develop these skills. I know about using things like cornflour etc but is there anything else? Are…

Snack Time

How do you do snack time? I have a very big reception class and there is not enough space at the tables for them all to sit. Have tried all on the carpet but milk gets spilt as it is a squash! Have tried some on carpet, some at tables but that way, when they are done, there is nowhere for them to go or nothing for them to do and so snack time in generally a noisy time. How do you do it? Advice please!

Ta Situation...advice Needed!

Hi all. I have had a nightmare day and need a bit of advice before I see my Head tomorrow. I am in Reception and this year I only have 16 in my class. Up till today I have always had a full time TA (although last year the class was bigger). Anyhow, I have just found out that due to a situation with another class my TA will be moved to that class. This will leave me with TAs in the mornings only and these mornings will be split between 3 different TAs!! One of these TAs only has KS2 expreience. Added to this, my Head takes my class one pm per week (it is a small school and I do 90%) and my old TA will cover my PPA time. This means that during a week my class will ha…

I am really struggling with this! In our school we do cursive writing with a lead in and out. I am working through the Letters and Sounds scheme and writing letters is introduced in Phase 2 from day 1. My class is bright and able and some children are already writing letters at home. They just cannot do the cursive and their enthusiasm is waning because they feel that what they do at home is wrong. Let's face it -the s, f ,g etc are virtually impossible for 4 year olds to grasp, especially if their pencil control is poor. I know all about getting them ready for writing and we do all the right things during the day-mark making using a variety of tools and developing contro…

How Would You Handle This?

In the morning, the parents bring the children into the classroom. ( Can't change that as it's the way the school runs!). I am on my own in the morning, so have 31/32 reception children coming in with their parents/carers etc. Every day, atleast one parent wants to speak to me about something ( which is fine as it usually only a few seconds about something) In the mean time, the children all come and sit on the carpet, but while I am talking to parents, welcoming children in etc, some of the ones on the carpet will be laying on eachother, rolling on the floor etc. I can go over and stop them etc but there is no-one to monitor them or get them all sitting quietly etc. …
