No Sand Or Water Trays?
by Guest- 16 replies

Has anyone NOT got a sand or water tray in their classroom- through choice? I just look around our classroom and am so pleased with it- the layout, the organisation, the clear photographic labels etc etc but then I get to the 2 trays and feel bored. am considering filling them with alternatives (not sure what just yet mind you!), my thinking is that as long as there are plenty of opportunities to develop the same skills as sand and water would develop then does it matter? would be interested in other's ideas/thought about this and any suggestions for appropriate alternatives?

I wondered if anyone has any songs or rhymes they use at carpet time for getting quiet listening children. I found one '1, 2 3 eyes on me, 1, 2 eyes on you'. Does anyone have any others to encourage listening ears, bottoms on the floor, hands in laps etc. I used to use 'show me 5' and we had a list of the five things to remind us but I would like a more catchy rhyme but am struggling to make one up. Thanks

Parent Voice Books
by Guest- 7 replies

Hello All, I am after some help/ideas about parent voice books and would love to hear what exisiting practise is in place and how effective it is? I have searched the forums, and a first on here, I haven't found any threads! Perhaps people call them by another name? Ideally I would like a simple book whereby the parents can share valuable information as often as they like. Whilst our parents come into the classroom daily and we chat informally, there is i'm sure lots of significant information that does not get shared. I already have in place 'Good News' notices which the parents fill out and send into school however I was looking for a way to include the …

Transition To Year 1
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi everyone, Just wanted a few good quotes or things to support me when discussing transition to year 1 with my colleagues as everything I say seems to make no difference. They seem to think that by letting them play with a few toys when they have finished their work is transition and that I should have spent more time getting them ready for year 1 and should be more formal in Reception with a bigger focus on maths and literacy. I have said all the usual stuff but am feeling a bit low as nothing seems to make any difference and my children's scores were lower last year so I can't even back up what I'm saying with that as evidence. Although their progress was good …

Hi I have taught in FS for the last 3 years and we have always stopped CI for a morning and afternoon playtime. I have always felt it very confusing for the children.... "Ok, stop playing now.....you can't play with the things you were playing with before, we are playing with the bikes and cars now" As if one play have more value than the other. Now I am in a position where I can have complete free flow, all day, only stopping for lunch. We will release the staff 2 at a time for a coffee break. Children can carry on CI with facilitating adult and another adult can carry on focus groups without that stop start issue. However, I have never tried this. Does anyone …

Muscular Dystrophy
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi I have a little boy in my Reception class who has been recently diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. I have had a look at some information on the internet and have found out it can affect behaviour. The little boy is constantly throwing things across room, running out of classroom and is generally wearing myself and the teaching assistant out. We have given stickers for good behaviour and are overally praising good behaviour of other children. We have this week tried to take Reception class onto main playground but are worried about this child running off onto field. Myself and the teaching assistants have taken it in turns this week to watch him during playtimes an…
