Assessing Letters And Sounds
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi all, After dipping into this excellent forum for so long, I have finally signed up. I hope this post is in the right place, please correct me if I have got it wrong. We are currently trying to think of new ideas for assessing Letters and Sounds in Reception/Key Stage 1. Historically we have used assessment sheets at the end of each half term but they are so long winded and boring for both the kids and for us. They also seem pointless as we are taking the learning out of context by expecting the children to read sounds from flashcards, a skill that we feel is reasonably complex and ultimately unfair! We are keen to assess the children in a different, more relaxed way…

Does anyone have any good ideas of ways to include writing in a Hair Salon role play area? I have a lesson observation coming up with a focus on writing and it co-incides with a topic on Hair!

Is it appropriate for Reception class children (rising fives) to go into whole school assemblies? We have just taken in Rising 5s for the first time and the Head wants them to go into assembly every day. They last on average for 20-30 minutes and as our school goes up to Year 6, I don't think my class will understand most of what is going on. It is a long time for them to sit and doesn't seem to fit in with the ethos of active learning and continuous provison. Does anyone know if there are any guidelines on good practice for this that I could show the Head to convince him? Thank you.

Amazing Outdoor Learning Areas
by Guest- 0 replies

Hi, My little outdoor area is looking tired, worn and a bit sad. It is quite small and surrounded by the four walls of the school so cannot be enlarged! It has a playhouse which we use for role play, some storage boxes around the outside, a small square of grass (sometimes green!), a climbing frame right in the middle with a painted track around it which we use for a bike path. We have plenty of windows all around the outside and plain boring painted above that. Then we have the usual caterpillar tunnel, sand and water trays, two basketball hoops and a big chalk board My question is, how to make it more attractive and appealing? We have painted on the windows in the p…

Hello all, I am new to the forum so I'm not sure if I am going about this in the right way! I'm the art and display co-ordinator at my school and we are having a good push on art this year. However, I have little experience of Art across a whole school and I am looking for some advice or contacts within my local authority (south glos) who could spare a little time for me to have a look at how art is run across different schools? Any help would be much appreciated, as I'm unsure where to even start! Kim

Hi all, Well I've had the children in for one day and it went very well! I've spent all afternoon planning tomorrow and need some help?! I have changed things this year in my Reception class and I'm opening the door ten minutes before the beginning of the session to encourage parents to bring their children in! My question is: what do you put out for the children to do whilst the parents are there? I am planning that the children will come in and use the continuous provision for the first half an hour while I observe, however the children aren't used to helping themselves to things yet and so need to come in to activities and they need to be simple! The area …

Teaching French In Foundation Stage
by Guest- 15 replies

My Head is keen for all our classes to be teaching a MFL and as I feel most comfortable with French I thought I'd have a practise this next half term. I'm thinking of a few simple phases, numbers to ten, days of the week, colours and some key words based on our theme growing. I have found some help on Sparklebox but was wondering if anyone else could help me with resources etc they have used.

Just wondered if it was usual for FS2 children to attend a daily assembly in a primary school?
