nothing radical. But wanted to share that I love my class birthday display! (how sad!) It is lots of hot air balloons. this year the children decorated a shape for their balloon - with all sorts! then they have cut it out, attached string, helped to type their name, month and date onto the basket, and lastly today have glued on their own photograph. So they all look like they are floating in their ballon. They are so sweet and the children have spent a long time today looking at them and discussing them with their friends, lots of talk about my birthday is in.....mine is after/before yours etc. (which is the whole point isnt it!?!) After what feels like a long …

Outdoor Area For Kids With Asd

Hi everyone, my class are mostly year 2 and all have moderate to severe ASD. We've moved classrooms and have inherited a smallish outdoor area of our very own! This is very exciting except that my brain seems to have gone on strike! I have a few ideas of things I'd like to do with it but I just can't seem to get on a roll. The area is mostly concreted with a strip of beds up one side for planting (I'm planning to plant fruit and veg) and a very small area of grass. We've got one largish tree that I'm thinking of hanging a bird feeder from. As far as equipment goes, at the moment we've got 3 bikes, a plastic crocodile seesaw and a plastic slide. Not exatly awe-inspiring!…

Does anyone have any ideas for alternatives to 'hands up' to share ideas in class? I would love to hear your ideas.

For some reason we have it in our heads that we are not allowed to apply sun cream to our three and four year olds from a shared bottle (so they all have their own individual sun sticks). Is that actually the case?

Below are the contents of my email to Harriet Harman my MP and Ed Balls. HH has forwarded to Michael Gove but still awaiting comments from him. She replied by letter so can't copy. Ed Balls' reply below that. My email: I am writing in respect of the academy proposals currently being laid before parliament by the new education secretary. As an Early Years Foundation Stage educator I am extremely concerned about what this will mean for children of under statutory school age and those children in Reception classes who, although are of statutory school age, are currently educated under the legal framework contained in the EYFS and must remain so until the Sept after …

Admissions For 2011
by Guest- 13 replies

HI, Im wondering how anyone is going about changing their admissions for Reception classes - sept 2011. We currently have a long process meaning that only in the last term are all the children in together full-time. There are only two starting dates (sept and jan) but we have part timers included in all that. So I am excitedly looking forward to the prospect of all the children having close to a whole year in Reception. However, now I am faced with a decision, of how to change it, what to set up and what would be best for all involved. Do I do a staggered start over a few weeks, the first half term or the whole term? So I would be interested to find out how other sch…

Talk Partners Display
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi everyone, I have been busy revamping displays and suddenly realised today that my Talk Partner display is from Sparklebox. I was wondering if anyone had found a display resource on any other website - such as posters with guidance, such as look at your partner, only one person to speak at a time... I know this is easy to make but I have not got children for a few weeks yet and want to get the displays finished. Thanks XXXX

How Do You Organise Your Lessons?
by Guest- 21 replies

I could just do with a bit of feedback on how other recption teachers plan and organise their days. I work in a one form entry and have no one else to talk to or to plan with. I am teaching phonics/lit in the first session to the whole class for 15 mins then I send them off to a chosen activity that is linked to our general topic but not necessarily to the lesson introduction!? I then keep one group to work with myself or the TA based on what we have been looking at as a whole class. I repeat this for maths and then in the afternoon I try and do more KUW/Creative focus work. I am finding that the same children go to the same activity if I dont choose them to be in a …

When I was thinking about my long/medium term maths plan for year one this year I decided not to go with the blocks that the primary strategy recommends. Personally I find the mix of things throughout the blocks very confusing and I much prefer to seperate it out to do one thing at a time, so say a couple of weeks on shape and pattern, then a couple of weeks on data handling etc making sure there is a good mix throughout the term. Do any other year 1 teachers do this or is everyone else using the blocks? If you don't what have Ofsted had to say about it? Just a bit worried that I'm going to get in trouble as we're expecting them this year!
