Hi, We are going to be giraffe class in September and I have been searching for songs and rhymes about giraffes for the children to learn. Most I have found are very complicated and long, if anyone has any giraffe rhymes, or even zoo ones, it would be great if you could share. Thanks everyone x

Hi All Apart from the occasional carpet session I don't have my class taking part in a whole class activity, I am far more informal than that. Most carpet sessions are small groups, as are any teacher led activities throughout the day. However my colleague is a big believer in introducing whole class sessions to prepare them for year one. She does this by teaching whole class handwriting every week, starting with an input session on carpet and then a carousel of activities that the children move round in order, when directed to do so. I can kind of understand the logic behind this but I still feel that it is better to withdraw small groups of children to do handw…

Hi, I met a lady today who sends her children to a steiner school - and what an amazing conversation it was! I have briefly looked at this method through my study but it was so different hearing a 'real life' experience. The main thing that struck me was that she, and presumably the other parents, who pay for their children to attend are already 'signed' up for the ethos of formal teaching later, importance of imaginative play etc. and I though how nice it must be not to have to explain to parents that we are not going to teach their 3 year old to read "so they are ready when they go to proper school!" Anybody here any any more experience? I would be v…

I'm creating some 'writing boxes' for next year for my year one class. These will contain small role play items and writing opportunities regarding a range of jobs. At the moment I'm looking to start with police, detective, teacher and maybe author or builder. I need to teach the children how to use these resources appropriately though as they haven't seen anything like it before and I'm not sure they had much role play last year. Are there any books anyone could recommend (fiction or non fiction) that show what sort of things these people do? I'm hoping to read them to the class one a day or one a week then introduce the appropriate box so they'll have an idea o…

Currently the children come in in the morning sort themselves out and go straight onto the carpet. We take it in turns as staff to meet and greet and chat to any parents that need to talk. However I am thinking of changing things but not quite sure how. In sept there will be 40 children (across 2 classes) in a shared cloakroom and large classroom. To have all these children entering the cloakroom at once, plus adults is not going to put the new ones at ease! I have toyed with the idea of parents coming into the classroom to settle children and join in CP, which should ease the pressure in the cloakroom. Then starting out carpet time 15 mins later. But my concerns a…

Dear All, Have recently taken over as EYFS Leader in a 3-form entry school with 2x nursery classes. When I taught abroad, I had so many resources for gross motor play - mainly huge wooden blocks, tyres and wheeled toys. This is the area at my new school which is lacking. I have a budget at my new school but would appreciate any advice for where to get quality equipment that lasts! We have a large area with tarmac and a large field, but not many covered areas. Also, any tips on how to store outside equipment on a budget would be greatly received! Wish me luck! Fluffy Lamb :-)

Does anyone else use this scheme? I just wondered if anyone had sorted the units so that different aspect of PSRN are taught in a mixed up way, rather than all the number, all the calculating then all the shape, space and measures. I know I could do this myself, but thought I would ask in case anyone has done it already and wouldn't mind sharing. (Just before I get shot down, it's not the only thing I use, I don't teach directly from it, i plan maths that fit with interests and needs) I just wondered if anyone had done this to make my life easier and my list shorter! Thanks xx
