Hi, I might be teaching mixed reception year 1 from september, and am already trying to get my head around it. I am currently thinking about september. This year the reception children had a settling in period of mornings only before they stayed full time. I was just wondering what people who had mixed age groups do, so that I can start thinking that way and letting parent know - should my class be mixed. thanks, Emily

Beebots

Hello, I am being observed teaching ICT next week and would really appreciate some help! My topic at the moment is Dinosaurs and I thought I would 'dress' the beebot up as a dinosaur and get the children to help make a playmat. The children have used the beebots before and can program the beebot using 1 step commands (forwards, back, turn etc). Some of my more able children can program 2 or 3 step commands (i.e forwards2, turn, forwards4- all in one go). My dilemma is, how do I move the more able children on? I am thinking thay could maybe record in some way or maybe give the directions for a friend to follow. Your advise would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi all My school have recently created an e-safety element to our ICT curriculum, however the ICT coordinator would like me to help him with the Foundation Stage. I think it is really important to begin educating children as early as we can about computers and how to keep themselves safe as it can be a very dangerous place. The main areas that I think we need to focus in Foundation are; Teaching children how to close down screens, when using the internet so that they know what to do if they see something that they don't like. Asking permission to use the computer and talking about what they are doing. Speaking up if they don't like something that they see. I als…

Hello Next week our PSRN focus is length. I thought about getting the children to make different length worms and to compare by direct comparison. I'm not feeling that inspired by this though and wondered if anyone had any weird and wonderful ideas I could copy? I just want the children to feel excited and motivated by the tasks!!! Thanks Vicki

Does anyone know the ratios for school trips? Currently we say 1:2 for 4yr olds and 1:6 for 5+ but have been told that 1:2 is too low and should be 1:4 or 1:6. I working a mixed YR/Y1 class. Can anyone help? There doesn't seem to be any set ratios.

We have recently changed our sand tray for water, but the water in it quickly becomes murky, even after an hour's play. It's very difficult for us to change it every day because it's huge and there is no way to get it out of the room to empty it, plus the tap to fill it up involves is a trek through the school with heavy buckets. Does everyone else change theirs everyday? Is there anything you can put in the water to help keep it clean? Also I'm hoping to put some bubble bath in the water, does anyone have one they can recommend that is all right for children?

Hi all, I work in a reception class and would like to arrange some 'parent workshops' for parents and children to attend together. My aim is to plan for six workshops during the year, one for each area of learning. We would like to invite about 10 parents at a time to take part in a 'hands on' activity with their children. I have thought of ideas such as making cakes, playdough etc, but could really do with a few more ideas. Does anyone else run this sort of workshop? Have they been successful? Thanks

hello everyone, i hope u can help. im in my first year as a reception teacher although have been teaching for years. My Head has suggested, following an observation of another Reception colleague who uses this practice, that when having whole class carpet sessions, the children should be seated in rows of 'ability' . this seems totally at odds with what i have understood the foundation curriculum to be. can anyon advise pls?

Help Please

Hi all I am a qualified Nursery Nurse to level 5. I am looking to find employment as a teaching assistant but unfortunately because I have no recent experience of working in a school, this often goes against me. I cannot volunteer in a school due to work (financial). I was wondering if there is any advice you could give to me to get my experience etc across as I know I can do the job and would be good at it. My question to you all is what are schools really looking for in the terms of working in reception etc. Thank you. Netta
