Parents Info Evening - Please Help!
by Guest- 1 reply

I teach a Reception/Year 1 class and we are holding a parents information evening next week to inform them about the curriculum, Letters and Sounds etc. In the past things have been done v formally but I am working hard to change this and my Head is really supportive. We want to explain about the importance of learning through play and first hand experiences. Anyway, I am planning to do a talk first and then take the parents into the classroom to try out some activities. Our theme next week is 'We're going on a bear hunt' so some of the ideas I have for the parents to try out (and the children during the week) are: build a cave for the bear using boxes or construction…

Year 1 Planning

Hello! This is the first time I have posted in the forum although I've often browsed around it! So I hope this is in the right place! Anyway I'm a FS/KS1 coordinator working in reception and I'm trying to support the Year 1 teacher with planning and delivering a curriculum in Year 1 that obviously meets the requirements of the National Curriculum but will support transition for the children moving to Year 1 from reception. We've been involved in a transition project, which provided lots of good ideas we've tried out! The problem we're having is what the planning should look like. The course we went on didn't really give any guidance on planning, as they said it's very i…

Rabbits

We are thinking about getting a couple of rabbits. The local pet store is likely to sponsor the set up costs (build a hutch and run) vets bills etc and we will make provision to look after them over the weekend and holidays. Just wondered if anyone else has rabbits in their setting and if there are other things to consider (I've looked into the health and safety aspect and will do a full risk assessment). Thanks in advance Vicki

Part Time Teaching In Reception

I need a little help. I'm just about to finish my maternity leave and am having some difficulty with my school allowing me to return part time. They have concerns over part time teaching in a Reception Class. I however feel that it is good for the children to have relationships with a number of adults and as I have worked with the other teacher for over 5 years, feel we could deliver the curriculum successfully. If anybody has any other positive points on part time teaching in reception I would love to hear from you or if you have any ideas where I may be able to get some quotes/ evidence for the benefits to the children then I would be really grateful. K xx

Sparklebox Substitute?
by Guest- 2 replies

Our LA in common with many others has now blocked all use of Sparklebox. Whilst I wholeheartedly support and agree with this, it has left those of us who cannot draw or spend a long time designing things using ICT, with a gap in our resource provision for things like visual timetable, pictures of activities etc. Has anyone come across a similar/ substitute site which has the same kind of things on it that they could recommend to be used instead?

I thought I had an easy job on my hands...! Next week I'm having my first class assembly on the topic of People Who Help Us At Home. Really wanted a funny rhyming poem about families that my reception class could learn... but I can't seem to find anything anywhere!! Anyone got any good ones up their sleeve?? Thanks in advance!

Parents' Evenings

Hi there, Just wondered if anyone could help with my dilema. What does your school do if you have a family where the parents are separated/divorced and they request separate parents' evening appointments. This seems totally unmanageable - you could end up with a massive extra time committment if say just half of your children had parents who were separated/divorced. I am sure I have read it somewhere in the past that separated/divorced parents are each entitled to individual copies of reports, letters sent home etc. but not to separate parents' evening appointements. Is it just my imagination, or wishfull thinking? Any advice welcome - thanks.

Hi - I wondered if anyone had any ideas or experience of dyeing wool, fabric, paper etc? We were looking at a jumper and talking about how it got from sheep's wool to coloured yarn and we thought it would be good to have a go at dyeing ourselves. (not dyeing ourselves, doing the dyeing ourselves - although I expect there will be some self-dyeing involved... )
