Does anyone have any ideas for adult input to teach about traditional story openers in reception? I am being observed by our EYA who was less than impressed last time she visited our school so after working with her I want to make a good impression! Thanks

Hi On a Wednesday afternoons we have a busy hands time where all objectives and activities are based on fine motor skills development. We call this Busy Hands time and I would love to have a song to start the session to warm up our hands and minds to what we are about to do. Anybody already using one or got any ideas? Redbase

Electricity

Hi - new to the forum - I'm a GTP just starting a 10 week placement in reception. been asked to do KUW lessons for electricity theme - any ideas would be grateful. For the GTP we need to show lesson plans for adult directed and child initiated learning (which is different to free play chill time for us). I struggle thinking of the independent activities... I'm okay with adult directed as I still have my Year 1 head on - but would welcome other ideas. I thought I could do a brain storming what do we know about electricity, you can't see it, you can't smell it, you can't touch it..... but it's there, and fill out a mind map of kids ideas on IWB, anything they k…

My Nursery Nurse has suggested that for an overarching topic in term 4 (this being term 3) we use a famous painting as a starting point and see where it takes us - I was really excited about this until I started looking for a painting - the ones I like thus far are by Pieter Bruegel (the Elder) but now I'm stuck can anyone suggest/offer any ideas around the topic 'take one Picture' This is the first time my NN has suggested a whole new topic and I really want to encourage her as she is great and works so hard, the bottom line is that the children need to have input and that we can ditch it if its not a success - also the planning takes into account their (the children) i…

How Do You Trackmovement?
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi, I am a new reception teacher (Jan start)and because of the weather have only done 3 days this week. How do you track which areas the children access when they are not doing an adult led activity. I have already noticed one child who is always on the same area and two boys who seem to 'float'. I am beginning to feel like I am drowning a little as the classroom is such a mess but because the school was shut over Christmas I have had no time to organise it.This week I have been in a 7.30 and leaving at 5pm but am getting no where. There is also a tiny amount of evidence for their profile and no Learning Journey or book work at all. Where do I start? Any ideas…

Hi Folks while we have a day off school due to the lovey snow I thought I would try and get to work on devising a parents intro to phonics (for Nursery) meeting. Has anyone done anything like this and if so what have you put in it? As we do Jolly Phonics (just the action cards along with the song) I would obviously want to run through the actions with them. Plus we do letters and sounds so would want to show them the clip from the DVD re the pronunciation of sounds. Anyone else got any ideas to make it a bit of fun and perhaps interactive? Thanks Apple

We have the topic of toys starting next term......was wondering if anyone had any ideas about a suitable role play area? We had a Santa's workshop before CHristmas, so my earlier thoughts of a toy factory will be very similar! Do any of you lovely people have any nice ideas??

We have been advised by county that a very well known and much used and loved resource site is unsafe and should not be used under any circumstances. Has anyone else heard this or know anything about it.

I was just wondering what people's opinions of getting children to tell an adult what they want to write, then the adult writing it, then the child copying it from a whiteboard were? Do you think it is a good way of helping children learn to write? Would you say it is something that could be used all the time/on occasion/not at all? I'm just wondering because I don't like using it personally, I want the children to sound out words and write down the sounds they hear themselves, however it is fairly obvious to me that this "I write, you copy" technique is used by many many teachers for their lower ability children in year one (eg. the ones who can't yet write recognisa…
