What Do You Call Your Unit?
by Guest- 3 replies

I'm in a school Foundation Unit for F1s and F2s and with the new EYFS I just assumed we'd change the name from the FSU to the EYFSU. Now someone has said it's a bit long winded and asked me why we should change it. I feel a bit silly as I don't know - I just thought we would!! Is anyone else changing their name or are you staying as FSUs??!

Organising Fsu Advice!

I am just about to be the reception teacher in a foundation unit. The only other staff in the unit are two qualified TAs both very experienced in early years.Reception has 27 children full time whereas nursery is part time 12 am and a different 12 pm.Is any one else in this situation...how do you organise it successfully? My main concerns are: how we can provide continuous outdoor with only three adults in the whole setting, fit in reception weekly 1 to 1 reading (which is a whole school policy),covering all areas in teacher focus groups with so few adults ...and so many more !!!! Be really grateful for any ideas you have found work well. Thanks Andrea71

Afternoon Session Nightmares!
by Guest- 14 replies

I work in a FSU where we have a morning sesion then different children in the afternoon. Whilst the morning children are well behaved, we are finding that in the afternoon there are more children who ignore musical cues to come to the carpet and ignore the teachers. We have tried allsorts but even though we keep the same structure as the morning, we end up abandoning what we are doing to deal with behavioural/social issues. WE are all feeling disheartened and like we are policing the unit. Does anyone else have a similar problem or any tips??? Our nursery does take in children on their third birthday so we do have some very young children too

I have been asked to update our Early years policy and was wondering whether you very helpful people out there could tell me what sort of things you cover in yours or even better whether you could share some examples??? Any help would be very gratefully recieved!!!! Thanks Elfy xxx

Can anyone help? I have a super lady with me in my unit who is an experienced T.A, but is less sure of herself in the F.U To help and assure her in this slightly different role I wonder if anyone has any written guidelines, suggestions e.tc that I can pin up on the wall. If I had the time I could write a load of stuff out but I'm struggling with getting everything done as it is. Thanks

Hi, I've really no idea where I should post this so I apologise if it's in the wrong place - mods, please feel free to move it I'm a Registered Childminder and mum to 3 children aged 2, 3 and 6 which consequently affects the amount of children I can care for and obviously limits my income. My youngest will turn 3 in September and will be able to access his Free entitlement from Jan 09......so I've decided that maybe it's time for a change but I'm not 100% certain it's the right move. Last night I was having a look on the jobs section of my local authority website (as you do of course ) and saw a job for a Teachers Assistant for the Foundation Phase (I'm …

Tidying Up

We will be an FSU from sept, previously in the afternoon the chilren did a bit and then I spuffled round and finished it off, but I would like to have a better system in place, as we will have more children and more space. What do you all do? In a previous post someone mentioned a tidy up song on CD. What was the song and where can you get the CD from? Also someone said they had the areas on a board?, did the children take the card off the board?, how did you cope when the area changed usage? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Running A Very Big Unit!
by Guest- 12 replies

Hi Just wondered if anyone had some words of wisdom - I'm second week in to my job as teacher in charge of a foundation unit - we have 99 children in at a time - two reception classes and a 39 place nursery . We're seeing 138 in a day. We had to bring in all of the new nursery children (about 40) in 3 days because of starting back late and the census day - so yesterday was a bit soul destroying! I'm finding it tricky for a few reasons and could really do with some advice - my brain is frazzled and it's always good to get a different point of view! - at the start and end of the session we're in key worker groups - but I'm sharing my space with a class of 30 rec childr…

Although I've been a member for some time through my LA, I've never posted a message so hope this goes ok! I'm FS manager in a primary school. Recently had OFSTED which judged us as 'good'(phew!) However, I have a vision to take my FS further but can't get my head around how to do it. I want mixed age ability groups in my FS to cater for each individual learning need regardless of whether the child is Nursery or Reception age. Problem is we have a part time Nursery. How can we organise and plan for this? What we deliver to one set of chn in the morning. Obviously can't repeat it to YR chn in the afternoon. Do we have lit focus in morn and num in the afte…
