Hi Everyone Hope someone out there may have some advice for me. I run a morning only pre-school in a village hall and am planning on expanding to include some afternoon sessions. Has anyone out there any advise having done this themselves? Have taken some brief advise from Ofsted and they said initally I needed to write to them stating what changes would need to be made relating to the national standards and how I would cover these. Then they may need to visit to agree to the change in registration. Had a brief look at the standards and can`t identify any differences at this stage. Has anyone out there identified what they are? Common sense tells me they are lunc…

Just thought I'd share with you.... Went on a managing FSU course today at the IOE which was run by the lady who has writtien the two articles on here. I would highly recomend this course to anyone thinking of setting up a unit. I went with my head, we had lots of ideas and it really helped to consolidate and validate them and help us move forward. Would love to sit and read all the handouts she gave us now, but have to sit and sew wall hanging for art week exhibition....! Elfy x

Lunch Times

Hi I currently teach reception, next school year (this september) i will be teaching nursery and reception together in a FSU on site but in a seperate building. We are currently trying to plan lunch times. I would like the reception and nursery children to have their lunch in the unit, supervised by welfare staff. I am just interested to know how other people do it and if anyone has a way that works well. Some of the children will be on hot dinners - how would be best to manage this? Take the children over to choose their dinner and bring it back or have a menu and a member of staff collects the dinner? Im just not sure what to do and would appreciate advice on what…

I work in the Nusrey part of a fsu, the reception class do p.e as a formal lesson. As do the nursery although on different days, my questions is do the nursery need benifit from a formal p.e lesson as im not sure they get any thing from the lesson. I also find it difficult to think of exciting intesting lessons for the children,so would it be better if we scapped formal P.E and went outside. Im sure the same skills would be achieved. What do you do in your settings. Ta Kelly

Hi our school is developing a FSU in september and I will be the teacher, along with 3 support staff. I have got to deliver a presentation to our parents explaining the change and the benefits of a fsu. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what I should include or examples of what they do? Thanks Kat x

Help With Fsu Organisation
by Guest- 22 replies

Hi. I have been coordinator in our FSU since September and we are regularly making changes and amendments to routines etc. We have 26 place part time nursery and 30 reception children in one big room with no divisions whatsoever. We have 3 groups (myself and other teacher and nursery nurse) and we split into these for carpet sessions for Literacy, number, circle time etc. This works really well and the children gain a lot from the smaller groupings. The problem I have is being able to fit in quality guided reading and writing sessions for the reception children as the focused activity times are used for activities which all children access in a differentiated way. I…

by Guest- 4 replies

Hi All I hope you can please help! I am a Nursery Teacher in a LEA funded school FSU. I have been asked to develop a Foundation Stage Unit Prospectus to give to prospective parents which provides info about the curriculum, settling in routines, healthy eating, dropping off/collecting expectations etc. I have already started this and I'm attempting to make it interesting and readable for parents. I wondered has anyone any examples of an FSU prospectus they would kindly share so I can check I'm on the right lines. Thank you in anticipation.
