Had a phone call today to say school was on fire. I got there to find flames coming out of the roof. An electrical fire. The unit is waterlogged and the end of the building will have to be demolished. Its not the resources we can buy them again but all those things we can't get agian the photos, the kids work, the fish! I never imagined this would happen and now its all gone.

I am the chair of a pre-school, which runs from a terrapin on the site of a primary school. The primary school has no F1 provision, and about 65 children in reception, which is run very much like a FSU, with 3 base areas, and zones for construction, role play etc, utilised by all of the children. The pre-school runs 5 days a week both am and pm, and can have 24 children per session. It has an extremely healthy waiting list. The children from the pre-school eneter the school as a single intake at teh start of F2. So practically the pre-school has no F2 children. The LEA approached the school and pre-school asking us to set up a pilot integrated FSU with the pre-school and…

Hi All We are in our third year of running our FSU, lots of changes in that time! Our Headteacher spoke to me last week of his concerns! From the beginning we have worked through the sessions with no formal breaks (8.45 - 12.00 and 1.15 - 3.30), staff have been o.k. with this, someone always makes a drink for those who want one, and comfort breaks can usually be taken during snack time or CI Play. The Head is concerned because staff are becoming tired and stressed which is resulting in above average staff absence, he would like us to reinstate playtimes and assembly for F2. I know this really goes against philosophy of FSU, but I can't see any way aroun…

Adult Directed Indepedent Activities
by Guest- 0 replies

Hi, We work as an intergrated unit where children have access to continuous provision inside and outside throughtout the day and also access Focus adult-led activities. However, we do not currently direct groups of children to independent activities but i feel that the more able reception are definately ready for this. How do you manage this in a free flow situation? (We have a 60 place YR and 39 p/t YN in 3 interconnected rooms plus outside) Do people who operate in this way direct all children (both YR and YN), just YR or just those children they feel are ready? Thanks

Keyworkers In Fsu's
by Guest- 4 replies

To those of you working in Foundation stage units and operating a key worker/person system - do your children stay with the same keyworker through their 2 or more years in the unit or do they change? We are planning to work as a unit from september and have decided to have key groups made up of both age ranges, so there wouldn't be a natural change of key person from nursery to reception. Partly feel children would benefit from continuity of same person but is it a massive wrench when they leave their key person to move up to Y1?

I have heard of FSUs and have read the information on the forum however i was wondering if anyone knew of any good books, literature, websites that would help me in my quest to set up a FSU. The school is a two form entry school with part time nursery children. I would really appreciate any help people can offer.

Within the integrated units, do you do formal PE in the hall -games, apparatus, gym etc. I just wander as my new NQT keeps telling me that we should not do formal PE lessons with the Reception children- and if we are hoping to become an integrated unit should i have hall slots for Nursery and Reception? Thanks

Need A Change

Hello everyone, I'm a F2 teacher working in FSU with one full time TA who runs F1 and another TA who works 18 hours. We have 30 F2 children and 13 F1's. We had ofsted in September and our FSU came out with an outstanding grade which was fab. Now you may wonder why I want a change! The main reason is because I feel that we are still too formal and we don't actually work as a unit except in an afternoon. I quite fancy doing my topic work in the morning and then literacy and numeracy on alternative afternoons so that I can have a full run through with it. I feel this way the children will become excited and interested in what we are doing as so…
