We operate a small F.S unit A.M only in a small primary school. I have an excellent T.A My F2 children move into the KS1 room for P.M.that two other teachers share as a jobshare To operate as a F.S.unit with 3 year olds in the only room we have with just 2 adults, the routine has to be different to a reception only class running in a primary school. We have to have a balance between focused and C.I activities, inside, outside play, and time for good observations. My problem is that I cannot do this and fit in all Phonics, maths, handwriting, writing, reading checking letter sounds and key words frequently enough. I feel very frustrated as my children seem to be falling …

Stuggling (nearly) Fsu

I'm new to my school as one of 2 reception teachers, and for the past few years the fs has really stuggled. There's been a complete change-over of staff in the last 2 years, and it was decided to integrate fs1 and fs2 to make a foundation stage unit. Some of the staff who were here last year have been very against it, and now the fs1 teacher has come out and said that she doesn't want to integrate the 3 classes - even though this is what has been agreed with the head/governor/advisors involvement. I'm just wondering if anyone else has come up against similar difficulties and how they overcame them. I can't see a way forward with this, even though I can see that o…

Planning In Fsu

How does planning in a FSU work? As a school we have just started to redesign our curriculum to make it more interesting and relevant to our children. At the moment we have our nursery in a seperate building to the rest of the school however there is planning underway to attach the nursery to the school and create a FSU within the next 2 years. At the moment our Nursery and Reception plan seperately and we have begun to draw up a list of differnt topics for Nursery and Reception for our new curriuclum. Surely in a FSU you all participate in the same topic at the same time, otherwise aren't you defeating the object of being a unit? Sorry if this seems really simple …

Hello I work in a Foundation Stage, which is attached to a primary school. Presently we are in a building all by ourselves- just Nursery and Reception. We have been thinking about becoming a Foundation Stage Unit for a while now. Presently we have a Nursery of 26 children who attend 8.50-11.50, and two Reception classes 30 in each. I have contacted lots of FSU near us and have looked it up on the internet and i have lots of interesting reading and ideas but i just wandered if anyone could advise me on ideas of how organisationally we could work our day. Originally we had thought of having family groups who were a mixture of Nursery and Reception children but …

Our Receptin and Nursery are considering the idea of becoming an FSU. However we do not know much about it. I have read the articles and all of the items, i think, in the forum and i am sure i have lots of silly questions. One of which is, having just done my parents evenings how do you manage parents evenings in a unit. Presently although we have worked in family groups- we have a Teacher and a TA feeding back to the parents, and have all met prior so we have notes made. Maybe i have just answered my own question already- I just think maybe I am concerned that we won't get to know 90 children, as it was a struggle to get to know 60 children really, there are alwa…

Hi I was just wondering how a FS unit works from a personal view. I have looked on this section, read some articals and now I am just wanting to know how and what happens in one. I am going to be doing a placement for college in one from next week. How does it work out, I visited at lunch time and there were still some children playing with 2 members of staff. How do you plan for play in a mixed age group when nursery children are am and pm. How does the staffing work and staffing ratio etc. I am also not sure how my FSU works until I meet the children and staff next week. Thanks in advance Beth

He wasnt happy when i said this is not a reception class its a early years unit and children have free access to an outdoor area which they wouldnt have in a reception class. any advice would be appreciated thanks
