Assessment On Entry

I am the phase leader of a foundation stage unit which includes the Y1s. I am looking for an assessment which can be used on entry in F1 and tracked through F2 and Y1. We have many EAL children so we have a 60 word test which we carry out. I have seen the flying start stuff but I feel it leaves too much to personal interpretation. i want something that states the progress the children have made. I understand that maybe this is not the best thing to use with younger children but if I do not have evidence of progress my team look like they are not effective when they are.

I have recently joined a nursery group that is being run in and alongside a reception class of a very small village school. The nursery was taken in by the head as they had lost their premises and most of the committee. The school are paying my wages I and the head wish to create a foundation stage unit, But our early years dept. (Norfolk) are not keen. since I arrived we are running as a unit, But our suppot teacher (link) says we have to prove that we are seperate for ofsted, but we are not! Can anyone help us with the legalities of the school incorprating the nursery and doing away with the committee etc.

Parents Meeting

Well i have just come home from a parents meeting regarding the new unit. The main concerns were that Reception children have no advantages, which I quickly explained wasn't the case. The only other issues were our cursive handwriting, so it wasn't so bad! Just thought for anyone else I could post a brief outline of powerpoint presentation: Meeting_in_Word.doc

Hello all ! Posting for the first time and thank god there are so many experienced people to call upon!! Having taught F Stage for several years but always in either YR R or Nursery and in larger intakes, I now have small class of 8 Reception and 5 Nursery combined. I Only have one small classroom and was wondering - Am I supposed to be separating the children for lit and num focus ( The head says I should be making sure Yr R have lit and num focus each day) or intergrating them altogether ? Reception become part of mixed Yr R/1/2 class in the afternoon. Hoping for some advice! Thanks Julie

Hi Just to give an update really, we never thought our unit would be ready for the start of term, they were still laying carpet and things Tuesday around the children starting school - total madness, but the parents are really pleased and very positive about reception and nursery being togther an in reception i have had no tears this year at all not even from children who attended different nurseries, so thats got to be a huge positive Yesterday Hilary Armstrong opened the unit officially and we will be in the local press. She was very impressed and the press took pics of unit. I had been to ikea, pundstretcher, instores, etc etc all week for bits and bobs buts it's a…

Hi Our new unit looks completely fab, but I have some teething problems, would anyone be able to help? 1. They have not put screeens around the carpet areas for privacy when doing focused teaching or circle time, and being open plan I would like some screen that could be pulled out in use and pushed back when not....any ideas 2. A small fence which could section off the unit (indoor) so children couldn;t get out and run into the hall....just high enough so they can't climb over it 3. Ideas for a stage where children can dress up and peform, they can use a karakoke machine, and have a general movement area. should it be softer so children can sit on it and be comfy etc…

Getting In A Flap!

We are supposed to have our FSU up and running for September but work is no STARTING until beginning of July when asbestos testing takes place. They have the six weeks to complete the work, new ceilings, lighting, knocking walls down, patio doors to the outdoor classroom, new flooring amongst other things! It's all exciting but I'm panicking a bit, especially as I order resources and have no where to store them!!!! Just wanted to let schools in County Durham know about support with your outdoor environment: http://www.ewecentre.org.uk/sgdp/frontpage.htm They are coming out to help completely re-design the outdoors, as we have agreed to invest £2000 minimum into the o…

Hi, I am going to be Foundation coordinator in our recently established Foundation unit in September and am looking for some advice about how to get the balance right between adult directed and child initiated activites. Do all the adults in your setting have a focussed activity each session? Do you have adults who are available to support children in continuous provision? Approximately how many adult focussed activities do you have each day/ week? Sorry for all the questions but there really is so much to think about and organise and as I am moving from Y1 it is all very different. Thank you in advance!
