Rotas In Fs Units
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi , I hope there's someone out there as its a hectic time of year! I'm desparate for some advice on how to organise rotas in September. We're very lucky in that we'll have 6 (almost) full time staff in september. 3 teachers and 3 tas. I'm fine with the planning/organising whole class teaching sessions but when it comes to the rota(ie which adult is in which area for focused activites +biggest part of day) I just cant do the maths!! We have 3 rooms and a lovely big outdoors. One idea is to have 2 adults in each area (1 focuses one manages the child initiated play) which would be great in the fact that you could really focus if you knew there was another adult superv…

Resourcing The Unit
by Guest- 8 replies

I have been a budget to resource the indoor and some outdoor equipment. Obviously we need a cooker and fridge. We also have to replace a lot of small world stuff, but I think storage is going to take up some money. I was thinking of clear plastic trays in wood units, with the odd cupboard placed around the unit, and used to section off areas. If anyone has any advice or photos to share which would help with storage and general resource ideas, I would love to hear from you. My budget os £3500. Many thanks

I know there is a topic in the dedicated nursery area for this but nothing for those of us in FSUs or in the process of setting up FSUs and thought it would be a good ideaif we had something similar .............what do other people think? We get lots of visitors to our unit (only our first year as a full FSU previously an EYU) As there are very few FSUs up and running in the county we are limited to visiting schools not much further along the line than us but would love to look at longer established Units to see how we can progress. Our head is very happy for us to visit other schools and for other schools to visit us. Anyone interested?

Hi, As you all may know I work in a FSU with 46 Reception aged children and a 39am/pm nursery unit with 7 staff (1 being an LSA). We are currently readjusting our timetable to include at least 1 hour of uninterrrupted play (previously had 45 mins and 30 mins) and we are struggling to get the balance right. How do you fit in focus activities, in particular numeracy and Literacy activities for YR (I have been told I should have 1 of each per reception child each day) and still have at least 50% of the time being child initiated. Do group times count? Our groups vary in size between 13 and 18. Would anyone mind sharing their daily timetable and explain when …

by Guest- 2 replies

Hi I am trying to put together an action plan for the FSU which is due to be ready for Sept 2006. So far, I've audited all resources in Nursery and Reception, and ordered new for the unit. I've also looked at planning for Nursery and Reception, next I was thinking we should map out the areas of learning within the unit, can anyone help with advice and support I hope i'm doing the right thing. I went on a transition course yesterday and we really need to work on transition into Year 1 from the unit next year! So I guess that will come into it, my head is buzzing. I set out my action plan under these headings: Area Issue Target to reach S…

I am not sure where the best place was to post this. We are becoming a foundation stage unit with in a 3 to 11 school. Is anybody in such a set up and how does it work? We are 3 schools amalgamating so it is all new. We actually will have two parallel units. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also if anybody knows of similar settings we could visit.

Hi all does anyone know of any good books on setting up FS units? We are starting in September and are considering how we would like to do it. I've been reading the discussions on here and have printed off some examples, so we have a start, but I just wondered if there was anything published anywhere? thanks Debbie

by Guest- 7 replies

Does anyone have tried and tested weekly/fortnightly planning format for unit which has part time Nursery children working with full time reception children? We have 2 teachers, 1 NNEB and 2 TAs in the morning wirh 26 N and 30 Rec children and a teacher and TA with Rec in the afternoons. Rather than reinventing the wheel, is anyone happy to share samples of short term planning which might help us?

New Foundation Unit 1 2
by Guest- 32 replies

In our primary school we have just set up a new foundation unit with nursery and reception together. I currently teach Y1 but have been asked to go and coordinate the foundation unit from Saptember. There will be myself, a nursery nurse and a TA for the first term and then another teacher appointed in January when numbers in Reception rise. I have taught in Reception before but not nursery and have never taught in this way. I am quite apprehensive about the move and would be grateful if anyone could share their experiences, positive or negative. We have one large room and one worry is about catering for the needs of 3 and 5 year olds in this one space. Thank you for …
