Hi! I am sorry this is the 2nd time I post this in the forums, but I am not sure where to post it since it covers different age levels . I hope you excuse me. Okay? I wanted to know your opinion based on your personal experiences. In our school the idea of working as a 'unit' from BTTM to Reception seems to be coming, not completely as a real physical unit.. but in the planning. There is the idea of using the same topic for 3 years in a row... not only on special holidays like Welcome Back to School, Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day or Father's Day... but also in themes like: Bears, Minibeasts, The Zoo, The Sea/Under the Sea, and the seasons. …

Hi, this year is my NQT year and I am in Reception. My school is moving towards developing a FS unit at Easter. I am going to be the person running the unit. I am quite excited about it, but I need loads of advice about the running of and planning for - I have been reading with interest the posts. Does anyone run a unit in the Doncaster ish area that I could visit?? Also, as an NQT can I expect a pay rise??????!!!!!!! I have been to see one unit and another 2 lined up after Christmas, but I am using my NQT release time to research the unit idea. Any comments, ideas, help etc?? Thanks

Foundation Units

Can I ask all those currently working in foundation units if they teach P.E. as a discret lesson in their school hall for example. Also do people have Nursery and Reception divided into say colour groups for certain activities and how do you stop them all and gather the separate groups together and move them to a certain area without wasting alot of time or going looking for individual children. One more question - what do you do after Easter because at my school the Reception children are expected to have a Literacy and Numeracy hour. Thank you - all comments are gratefully received.

I am really keen to find out if anyone knows of or works in a foundation stage unit in a small school? We are presently looking at ways of increasing the intake numbers and think this might be the way forward. Cheers Verity

Fsu Numbers

Hi! We are an infant school with 52 p/t nursery places and three yr classes of potentially 30 per class. We want to move to a unit with probably two classes as our numbers are so large. I'd be interested in what others in this forum think. Our staffing is 1 teacher and two NN in nursery and three teachers and three LSAs in YR.

Staffing?

Hello Having just been promoted from Nursery teacher to FSU co-ordinator and coming through my first OFSTED with a good report I now have more issues can you help? We have combined our Nursery and Recption class together in a newly refurbished FSU. At the moment we have myself (qualified teacher) a Nusery Nurse and an LSA on a temporary contract until Easter. After Easter we are hoping to employ another NN to replace our LSA. Does anyone know if 1 teacher and 2 NNs is enough staff for a FSU of 39 children? Any suggestions on staffing levels would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoyed to recent article on FSUs Thanks

Lunchtimes!

Just wondering how things run in other FSUnits at lunch. We have 64 children who stay for dinner. We take them over to the main canteen at 12 O'clock and then the LOs bring them back over about 12.25. They then play out until 1oclock There are 3 LOs but they have complained that this is not enough. I agree that its a difficult job-one LO often has to be attending to children who have had accidents which leaves just 2 supervising outside which can be a nightmare! The only other solution was going to be to bring my 32 reception children over to play with the rest of the school which would have been even worse coz I don't think they're ready for it yet (whole school p…

Observation And Assessment

Hope everybody had a good Christmas. Not sure whether I should have put this in section titled 'observation and assessment' but as its in the Reception/Year1 section I thought I'd better ask here instead as I find it to be a lot different now I'm in a FS unit. I'd like to get an idea of what others do as I'm sick of doing what the LEA suggests and then realising that its not for the best after all. Assessment: I always used to assess at the end of each half term as I found that it gave me a clear understanding of what the child had learnt in relation to what had been taught that 1/2 term (esp in Lit and Numeracy). I know that assessment should be ongoing and feed int…
