Hi there, Having just moved into my 2nd post in a voluntary aided school's pre-school (this time it is a Foundation Base or FSU too) I am finding that the ratios are more errr 'flexible' and understand this to be as they are not on the Early Years Register. I am also an EYP so I know that in theory I could operate on 1:13 when the leader is on PPA but in practice this presents a challenge. Also at a recent seminar on the new EYFS i know staff deployment is mentioned, but it again is open to interpretation..... i just wondered what other people's experiences, views and advice was on how best to meet the children's needs. Thanks all

by Guest- 3 replies

Hello, Yesterday I was given the news that my head would like our nursery and reception classes to become a unit in september. I am the reception teacher and have also been given the role of FS leader. We are currently looking for a new nursery teacher. Currently we have 2 classrooms joined by a cloakroom and a large room on entry in to the FS area which is currently used as a key worker room for nursery and a quiet guided reading/IEP area for both classes. Both classrooms have direct access off them to the outdoors. (so very lucky!) I am excited by the idea of setting up the unit but as a new FS leader I am unsure as to how to go about setting it up and …

Shared Outdoor Learning Area
by Guest- 2 replies

We are having a new Reception unit built and will be sharing an outdoor learning area with Nursery. We can not set up family group key people groups with hursery and reception due to the layout and 2 separate buildings. Does anyone have experience of sharing an area like this? We are planning zoned areas and will provide resources suitable in size for both age groups. I am concerned about how to share planning and outside staffing and writing obs on all the children. Do you tell the children they should only go inside in their own building?

Hello all we are a maintained nursery class in an infant school. We currently offer the 2.5 day sessions to our parents but are thinking of offering the possibility of topping up to extend this to the full week. I would like to ask if any maintained nurseries out there already do this and how much you charge and more urgently for us the type of contract you have to ensure that parents pay on time/advance etc. I would be ever so grateful to see a copy if at all possible. This is the first time that we have done this and would welcome advice from more experienced settings already carrying this out. Plus any tips on how you manage those that don't pay on time. many thank…

Hi all, After spending a year covering a manager's maternity leave in a preschool that is part of a school but not yet a FSU...my contract is coming to an end so been job hunting. Next week now have 2 interviews lined up, and the one I think I want is in a newly forming FSU in a village school. I have been line-managed by the Reception teacher in my revent position and done some cross-planning which will be useful experience. There is no request to lead an activity, so it will be an interview with the Head and governors/commitee I think. Any advice?? I have read the Ofsted (which was good)...they have had an interim assessment but will be due anytime from the summer …

On Entry And Age Bands!
by Guest- 2 replies

Help!!! I've been sitting here for 4 hours trying to collate my data. In our LEA we have to fill in a sheet that links the children to development matters age bands and whether they are within, above below or big time below. All my baseline assessments have been from observations so far. Some evidence links directly to scale points. Other evidence links to age bands. Is there any link between FSP scale points and age bands or should I just do a best fit per child for each area of learning? Please help- my head is on my back for this data ASAP!

Hi, I'm looking for ideas of how to do a baseline for calculations for my reception children? My other baselines so far have been conducted by observations so I don't want anything too formal just a suggestion of resources to put out. Many Thanks in advance.

September On Entry Assessment

I was wondering what people generally do in September with regard to a new intake of children. I'm going to have 23 children starting my reception class in September and was thinking about doing a more formal baseline assessment but just wondered is this what most settings do - any suggestions? Thanks
