Ratios In A Fsu
by Guest- 3 replies

We are planning to start a FSU in September and wondered if anyone can offer some advice re ratios. We will have 12 YR chn and 12 YN chn at the start of the yr, and taking in more YN chn as the year goes on, and we usually gain 1 or 2 Yr chn too as the chn move around school locally. We are planning on have 1 CT and 2 qualified NNs but are confused as to how many chn we can have in a session in total. Some guidance appears to say 1:13 (so up to 39 chn in total with that levle of staffing) and other guidance seems to say you can have no more than 30 if there is only 1 CT. Can anyone shed some light and help me move forward with this please?!?!

Target Setting In Fsu
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi, We set targets for our F1 Reception age children about 3 or 4 times a year. A letter is sent home to parents and the targets are often a mixture of social (turn taking etc) and academic. We always make sure the targets set are ones which parents will be able to work on at home with their children. However I am having second thoughts about target setting after listening how the rest of the primary school review and update their "smart" targets with their children much more regularly. Our planning shows individual differentiation and planning for progression so staff are aware where each child needs to go next with their learning. I'm not sure whether target setting …

Seperate Classes Or Foundation Unit?
by Guest- 5 replies

Just something that has been on my mind for a while now and wanting other peoples perspectives on it. I have only ever worked in foundation units, i did all my teacher training in one, and have worked in 2 since then both in very different areas. Recently I keep hearing about a number of units that are returning to seperate nursery and reception classes, still remaining very informal and playbased etc but many people are discussing that having such large numbers of children within a unit at any one time as well as high numbers of staff is proving to be difficult. What are others thoughts on this? I am absolutely passionate about teaching within the early years full stop…

Right, this is bothering me, and I need to find out how others manage it.... We are currently a preschool operating from our own purpose built terrapin. We are in partnership with the school whose site we are on, and have outdoor areas the children share, and have taken the sessions over to the Reception area as it currently is for their sessions. With lots of staff on hand, a smallish area, and being new to the children, we have had no problems. But the good news is come September, we will have a new terrapin with an adjoining corridor attached to one of the Reception rooms. Our terrapin will be the preschool aged base room and the creative/messy zone, and the…
