Hi everyone, just got the kids to bed after an 'after-hours' event at our Pre-school .... and wanted to share it cos it was absolutely brill!! For a couple of years now we've done occasional special bedtime story hours where the children return to Pre-school with siblings/parents in their pyjamas with duvets, blankets cuddly toys, etc. and they all snuggle down for some story tellying, a drink and a biscuit. they are just lovely evening and the children are brill! This time we decided that the children might enjoy it more without their parents so the chidlren were asked to crawl through the magical story tunnel (table covered with blankets) into the story roo…

One of my minded children referred to herself as a 'guest' the other week. I thought this sounded much nicer than 'minded child'. What about 'visitor'? What gives the impression that the child is welcome and should feel 'at home' but also makes the boundaries clear? What about 'Mindee'? Not my favourite but I know some use it. I have recently noticed that some parents (Dad's) think their kids are just on a play date here three nights a week and don't know what I'm talking about when I say 'minded children'. Anyone not too busy eating Easter Eggs? Honey

If there is spare cartons of milk left over (through illness, hoildays or the child dosent want it.) Do you throw it away, let staff take it home or use it for staff tea ? We throw it away , as I dont feel comfortable useing it when it has been paid for for the children This is wasteful, so dont feel comfortable with this either !

I'd like to hear from others who work in a nursery unit with the ratio of 1:13. How do you manage to fit all the activities that are expected to be offered in a nursery setting into a three hour session, with just two members of staff? * free flow indoor/outdoor play * snack time routine * play with the children * observe the children * lead an activity * clean up the paint pots at tidy-up time * oversee tidy-up time * deal with toileting when needed * deal with accidents when needed * update learning journeys (and that's another issue - this should be done within the nursery session; I take mine home, but I don't 'expect' my TAs/keyworkers to do…

I have recently started working in a new nursery and whilst singing 'twinkle twinkle little star' and doing the actions, I was asked not to make the star sign (using thumb and forefinger) when I asked why ever not was told it is the signing language for gay and we were not allowed to use it in the setting. I have been in childcare for over 10 years and probably made that sign at least once a day for those 10 years, has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

HI all, I brought an incident to my managers attention about two staff members who were on the tennis court (our garden if you like) with the children and the gate was open and it had not been noticed by the staff. As i approached the tennis courts the staff were sat on the bench with one child, the other 11 were playing. I (as the deputy) told them they needed to count there children as the gate was open and also that sitting on the bench was not acceptable, unless doing it in play with the children. the first member of staff i spoke to was very dismissive ' yeah, we are going inside in a minute anyway', the supervisor told me the same. i asked them several times …

Child Who Is Blind

Hi all, Any advice on helping a child who is blind settle into our pre-school? I am in a large church hall (which we have to pack away). I am thinking of getting a persona doll to provide opportunities for the other children to contribute, and Mum seems very supportive, but I am a little apprehensive.

Hope you are enjoying the sun and not working too hard. I have an assignment to write which states - provide information about policies for a healthy environment.in 300 words I wanted to know whether my interpratation of this question is right. I thought I would a describe what a policy is and why they are important and then list and describe in brief detail each policy we have in the setting. many thanks

Don't ask why, but I have about 5,000 plastic sandwich boxes - the triangular ones you buy your sandwiches in at shops. Now - what do you make of that? I have a few ideas but what might you make of them? If you're in the north east you're welcome to some if you want. Honey
