I know there'll be someone with some ideas I've not thought of, but a Mum came to me this week and showed me her 18 month old son's fingers, which he sucks, continuously. He has his index and middle finger in his mouth all the time, palm down and has now caused such a weakness in his nails that one has almost come off completely, having broken away from the nail bed at the cuticle. Having had a good look at it, it's obvious that it's going to come off, and doesn't seem to be causing him any discomfort, he was happy for me to investigate how loose it was and giggled at me. Mum was obviously concerned and asked if I had any suggestions to convince him to stop …

Hi everyone I would be really grateful for some input on this, albeit i realise a bit time consuming I have attached a diagram of my setting, there is also an upstairs which isn't shown. Red lines are the fire exits. We are in a community center which is at times used by other people who use the toilets and kitchen area. This has never been a problem as doors into the main hall where we are situated are kept shut and we escort children to the toilets. Whilst this may not seem perfect we have been there for about 15 years (in those times such things weren't an issue) and we have adapted practice to take into account safety etc. The door between the main hal…

Sweeties?

Hello, My nursery nurse rewards the children with sweets. They fall over, they get a sweet, they are missing mummy, they get a sweet, helping to tidy, they get a sweet (you get the picture). Surprisingly the children have not cottoned on to the fact that they could milk this situation if possible. Despite starting a positive behavior Rainbow (the children can move up to the sun and 4 will get a little prize every week) and instructing my nn to follow my lead, she still gives out sweets (and forgets to use the rainbow!). Am i right in thinking that this is bad practice? I'm sure I went on a course once, where we were told that sweets (or any food for that mat…

What Do You Offer For Snack
by Guest- 13 replies

Hi we currently have a cafe snack system, that runs for around an hour a session. This in itself works very well but does take two members of staff, as we have one at the table chatting and engaging with the children, whilst the other is in the kitchen preparing the snack. We currently offer a piece of fruit and half a slice of toast, crumpet, small jacket potato etc. and I was just wondering what other settings offer at snack time. If we were to just offer fruit it would be easy for the children to help themselves and only have one member of staff used to sit with them at the table, this would also enable us to open the outdoor area for free flow play from the b…

Help With Room Layout
by Guest- 27 replies

Hi! As part of my EYPS work placement, I'm looking at changing the preschool room layout. The room was initially intended for about 8 kids, but numbers have risen to about 14, so it's rather chaotic and unstructured. I was hoping to have more defined areas that would be clearly recognisable by the children, i.e., role-play area, maths area, etc. I'm hoping this would help in keeping a bit of order with the children, i.e. only 3 kids in the maths area, rather than vaguely telling them 'You can't play here because there are 'too many' kids here'. I also hope it'll help in teaching them to be more tidy, i.e. once we're done with the toys in the constructio…
