Hello there folks We are about to do our parent/children workshop focused on outdoor learning. And I have been to do a short presentation re the benfits of this (this was asked on Friday and the workshop is on Monday!) Has anyone done such a thing before and if so have you any sound bites that I could include in the presentation? I aim to do a powerpoint with lots of photos of the children already at play in our outdoor environment to demonstrate the fun and learning that goes on, but would like some qoutes to back it up. (Theory and thinking type) I have also put together a quick questionnaire just to see what access the children have at home to open spaces and to …

We have a two year old starting with us after half term with a cochlear implant. It is amazing as he was profoundly deaf and mum tells us he has over 30 words (more than a few of our older ones!) He is having taster sessions at the moment. Does anyone have any experience of working with a child with an implant? He has 4 hours a week and we are going to employ his existing 1:1 for this as she has learnt sign language and been with him over the last year. (His nursery is closing) I have had a quick look and found a book called My Brother John about a boy with a cochlear implant. I'm not sure how appropriate it would be for 2 - 4 year olds but feel we need something …

Hello all, There is a staff who is particularly good, but takes advantage when manager is not around, drinks tea in rooms, sometimes leaves staff out of ratio, to pop out to smoke, because of that morning breaks was stopped. How can you approah staff to get them to stop without exposing the staff who gave you this information, we always address this issue at meetings, but it still does not work. I have heard of a nursery who made staff sign a document stating that they would not smoke in their uniform, or during their breaks not sure how that works. Parents also complaints about staff smoking, they see them as role models for their children and do not what th…

Hi there. I've just had a call from two parents who are both starting teacher training and want to put their two children in our pre-school. They asked if there were any grants available to help them cover the costs, and I said I would need to do some research. Do any of you lovely people know the answer? Is it a Working Families Tax Credit scenario? This kind of thing is very unusual for us as you can tell! Any advice gratefully received!

Hello everyone. We have a of max 25 children daily in our setting, 2 1/2 yrs to 4yrs. We have 3 toilets in the bathroom, they have Boy's on 1st door, Girl's on 2nd and Boys and Girl's on last (We have a separate disabled) - do we need to label each door or can we just have them all as Boy's and Girl's? Strange question I know, but when you have a line of girls busting to go and they won't "Because it says Boy's on the door" can cause a problem! Many thanks. Cheryl x

Hi there - we are a fairly new pre-school and finding our feet as such. Currently we have 2 members of staff and take 8 - 3yrs olds and 4- 2yrs olds. At the moment we have 8 3 years olds and setting is ticking along well. However we had a 2 year old start yesterday and another 6 starting through the next few months. My question is - how do you organise the session to ensure time is spent on the focused activity bearing in mind we only operate for 2.5 hours including snack and nappy changing etc. The reason I ask this is because little one who started yesterday is lovely bless but spent the whole time wanting to wash her hands in the bathroom or then painting them and wan…
