I have been asked to deliver a music session each week in our Nursery 3-4 yrs room and despite my user name, don't know that much about music! Anyone able to recommend a format they use so that I could plan a successful session which includes everything I should be covering. Many thanks for any replies.

Eyfs Staffing Issues!
by Guest- 15 replies

Hello, this is my first ever message so I hope it works and I get some replies! I am a nursery nurse who works in a 39 place nursery class with a teacher and a level 2 teaching assistant. We are full and I understand that these ratios are fine in accordance with the EYFS. However I am taken out of nursery to cover PPA in our reception class one afternoon a week and cover for our own teacher's PPA time/meetings/courses etc. This leaves either me or the teacher and the TA2 in nursery. Is this right? We have a few young part time students, are they counted towards staff ratios? I am really confused!

I'm sure I've read somewhere that children's mirror writing is a good development as it shows that there have been a connection in the synapses in the brain which controls body 'handedness' or something. This is for children who have been writing their name quite happily and successfully for a little while and then suddenly start to write it backwards, as if viewed in a mirror. Has anyone else come across this research, I've googled it but not found anything. I'm constantly reassuring parents that it's a good thing and they're not to worry about it - and particularly don't tell the child 'it's wrong'. What I generally do is encourage the child to start at the…

Just browsing my Playgroup on the Ofsted website and realised the contact number was incorrect so just phoned them to amend it and............. I spoke to the most dullest, 'I haven't got a clue what I'm doing and am sooo bored' sounding young man. Goodness knows how he'd react if it was a complaint. I ended the call with a big sigh and a chuckle - thought it was suppose to be an official professional organisation? He was probably looking at the sunshine and wishing he wasn't attending to telephone calls all afternoon. (hope he did change my number correctly!) ppp

Allocation Of Staff In Nursery
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi I was wondering if anyone could let me know how staff are allocated during the nursery session. I have just started working in a school as a nursery nurse (I have previously only worked in playgroups) I was suprised when I was aked to take a group of 10 children to do a musical activity to teach them about keeping a beat, I had no time to prepare anything or plan my activity and it had not been discussed with me until that time. Yesterday I was allocated to do a measuring activity - again totally out of the blue. Fortunately both went well but I am finding it very strange that I am not given the opportunity to plan for my activities. Every morning the teachers…

Hi all well doing the third unit of my DPP and its all about risks! They said that there should be risks assessments for at least the following: Preparing snack changing nappies giving medicine animals security arrival/collection of children fire equipment eg climbing fram Now we do daily risk asessments, assessments for outings, however we do not have risk assess for above (well never seen them anyway). We do have policies though. Does anyone have any they can share?

Forest Schools
by Guest- 22 replies

Hi My setting has small private bluebell woodland literally a few yards from our front door. We have increased the times we use this and now spend half the session down there regularly. As we are increasing our use I am in unfamiliar territory and cannot afford forest school training which would be a big help. Has anyone out there any advice on books or articles that would help me ensure I am getting the most out of sessions. Also I need some research or something so I can state the value of this time and just what the children are learning to ensure I can justify these sessions to parents and Ofsted! Any advice and help would be much appreciated. Sally

Said they have not got my details and that only the manager can talk to them. I tod them that I had spoken to them before on at least 3 occassions and the man said that they shouldnt have. Is this right? I asked if I had a query who would i talk to he said my manager. Is this right? Or perhaps it is just that department?

Senco Qualifications?
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi Well feeling lazy and not done a search yet but wondered if anyone knew the answer to the following? My "friend" on the committee has said it was queried by another comm member about the fact that we thought our supervisor and an ex- colleague (who left at Easter) coud be classed as Sencos. This comm member is from a school background and was under the impression that to be classed as senco that attending only local authority courses was not enough (think supervisor had to attend 4 out of 5 DIFFERENT senco courses). This comm member thought that supervisor needed to attend a course that was run by private firm and that LEA courses just made her SENCo aware. Ca…

We are trying to use some funding from the quality and access grant scheme to arrange for our playground area to be painted with markings to improve play opportunities for the children. The problem that I have is that we have a rubber tiled safety surface, and most playground marking companies now only provide thermoplastic markings which are not suitable for our surface (due to the heat used in the markings process). Does anyone out there know of any companies that do the old fashioned painted playground markings, that might cover the London area? Have spent days googling like mad, but so far haven't come up with anything!! many thanks
