Can I just ask if any LEA maintained Nurseries charge for sessions outside of the free entitlement that children get. We are considering opening for full days and charging if parents wantmore than their free entitlement of 15hours but LEA representative I spoke to today said it's not allowed although I know of at least 2 other maintained Nurseries in our LEA who are doing this already. Do you think we should just go for it anyway or wait until the LEA give us permission.

We have signed up to this self assesment system, quite excited about getting started and also decided to use this as a topic for an assignment on Uni course! Only thing is the observation isn't been done till April! so got a while to wait! Has anyone done this already? if so how did it go? Also info I could use for my assignment would be useful! Any fact/figures ect would be good - I have asked our EYIO for some info but again she isn't coming for a while and now I am excited I want to get going!! Thanks

What Would You Do? 1 2

Hi there, While I was on study leave this morning the following incident occurred at my setting. Junior member of staff from another room walked in and opened a cupboard where a child's Ventolin inhaler is stored. When challenged she told acting supervisor that she needed it as hers was at home. Supervisor said 'no' and told manager of her decision. Staff member later gleefully informed supervisor that manager had watched her use the inhaler. Am very disappointed at this gross disregard for procedure. Needless to say, had the person been in severe breathing difficulties she would have been attended to. (By the way, she smokes too). Am I over reacting? What…

(See post title...) I ask this question because I have been on a Quality Assurance visit today, and the criteria and observations require "some adults and children eat together. Children sit in small groups with a familiar carer who eats the same healthy food" The manager said that this would not be possible as a ) she had some staff that would not like nursery food b ) the staff have to support the children in cutting up food, keeping them clean etc c ) there is not enough space/staff to sit in key groups The argument from a QA point of view is that children nowadays (I'm not even THAT old and I'm sounding like my mum!) don't have the 'sit and eat at th…

HI, we had a staff meeting and the point raised was how can we ensure we effectively know which children are inside and which are outside. we are a day nursery children 3 months - 5, and have freeflow access of our pre-school area. there is always one staff member inside and one outside, on the occasions that the children are all outside there will be two staff out there, but they come in as and when the children come in to stay in. how do you ensure you effectively know who is in and out... obviously visual checks i know, but is there a more accurate (or effective way to check). right now the pre-school children come in to the toilet which is off the main hallw…

Food Issues

We have a group of parents in our setting who keep giving their children the same meal until they eat it. So if they don't eat their breakfast it's kept for lunch and then possibly dinner. This is happening on a regular basis, and becoming more frequent. My manager seems to think this isn't an issue, but I'm getting really distressed about it. The parents are all very open about it and often come in saying "You might have a bit of an issue getting him to eat his lunch because it's last nights dinner, but try and make him eat it because he wouldn't eat it for breakfast" or "Can you give him two portions of snack please because he hasn't had a proper meal since breakfas…

Good afternoon everyone Does anyone know how I can check what SCOTVEC (scottish vocational education council) qualifications are equivalent to with regard to the EYFS? I have been on the cwdc website and there is nothing on there, so gave them a ring and they directed me to the Naric website. From what I can gather, they want money to give this information and at £235 for a quick turnaround, this I feel, is a bit excessive. The actual qualification I am concerned with is the National Certificate Level III in Child Care and (its either development or education). We have had someone apply for a job and are just trying to find out if this is equivalent to an…

Me again.. some have followed my other posts regarding finding new premises for our pre-school. I possibly may be back to renting a hall, this one being much more suitable and allowing freeflow outdoor use etc.. so now I am thinking start a new one.. Don't have the first idea where to start.. well apart from this brilliant forum of course! Found useful info on starting committee run pre-schools but I am keen to move away from committees (can't be much less supportive than going it alone!) Any hints or knowlegde anyone?
