Just had a call from a senior colleague at pre-school to say a parent tracked down her private home number on friday and phoned her today to ask if something had happened to her son yesterday at [re-school as he had a high temperature and was complaining of neck ache! Our setting is very hot on reporting any incidents/accidents and parents are always informed either by a phone call during the session (ie. a bump to the head) or advised at the end of the session (if a minor accident or incident). I do understand her concern for her son but anxious that a parent has contacted a member of staff on her ex-directory home number. We do not have a policy covering this area of …

Outoor Freeflow Staff Ratios

We have free-flow in our Preschool where children constantly have access to the outdoor space. However, during colder weather some staff are reluctant to go outside with the children and it can often end up with one staff being outside with 16 plus children, while two staff are inside with 8 or less! I raised concerns about this but was told that as it was freeflow then all that mattered was that there were three staff covering 24 children - inside/outside being viewed as the one area i.e Preschool. It would seem to be that with 3/4 year olds you need to be able to see the children you are in charge of - does any one know the ruling on this?

Hi, I have trouble ticking boxes defining whether we are private, voluntary or independant. We don't fit neatly into any model. We are private in as much as we are 'owned' by the church who employ the staff. However we are 'not for profit' and therefore not a business. We don't have a parent run committee so I guess are not voluntary. OUr trustees are the Church Council although being church run we are not actually a charity. What do you think? Can anyone define the 3 categories? Al

We are currently a playgroup that runs for three hours each morning. One of our parents is pushing for us to extend our opening hours. Am I right in saying that if we do this without a break during sessions that we would have to register for full day care?? But if the children went home for lunch we would still be classed as sessional care. Also if we were to have the children over lunchtime would we need to have rest facilities? Just trying to get all my facts straight before the next meeting as none of the staff want to extend our opening hours but feel that we are being pushed around by one parent who is very vocal!!!! Any help would be most appreciated. Thank y…

Hi Everyone, I'm not really sure where to put this so do feel free to move me if you think more appropriate. I'm just wondering if anybody knows if there is an age limit on how old a child needs to before we can refer them to SALT? We have referred a child in our pre-school room and the process has taken soooo long that he is only just being assessed now and he starts school in Septemeber- we referred him months ago. With how long this process took, I'm wondering whether we should start the ball rolling now for a little boy in our 2-3's room, he will be 3 in August and has very limited speech, he has only been in our setting for 4 months. He can communicate his n…
